Injury updates on Jones, Reimold, Schoop and Betemit (updated)

Adam Jones is bothered by soreness in his groin, and Orioles manager Buck Showalter elected to use him as the designated hitter again tonight in the series finale against the New York Yankees. Jones could play center field, which is his preference, but Showalter is being careful with him. The Orioles will be playing four games on the artificial surface at Rogers Centre in Toronto beginning Thursday night. "He's not happy about it," Showalter said, "and that's a good thing." Outfielder Nolan Reimold won't accompany the team to Toronto after undergoing two MRIs yesterday on his right hamstring and lower back. He has a slight tear in the upper part of his leg and will meet with a physical therapist in Baltimore. Reimold could take batting practice here while the Orioles are on the road. However, it's doubtful that he will be ready to come off the 15-day disabled list when eligible on Tuesday. Triple-A Norfolk infielder Jonathan Schoop will receive a second opinion on his lower back on Friday. He's currently on the seven-day disabled list with a "strain," but the injury could be more serious. Showalter wouldn't elaborate, but he said that he's hoping the "second guy disagrees with the first guy." Schoop is widely regarded as the top position prospect in the organization. He's batting .268/.331/.386 with six doubles, three homers and 18 RBIs in 34 games with the Tides. Update: Executive vice president Dan Duquette told reporters that Schoop has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back. He could need six-to-eight weeks of recovery time, depending on the second opinion, which will come next week in California. Wilson Betemit, on the 60-day disabled list with a Grade 2/3 tear in his right PCL, was examined today by team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens in Baltimore. He still hasn't been cleared for baseball activities, but he's increased his exercises.
