PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Jimmy Paredes sprained his left wrist today while diving for a fly ball from Logan Forsythe in the second inning that fell for a double. He's scheduled for X-rays later tonight.
Reliever Brian Matusz underwent an MRI on his lower back and the Orioles are waiting for a team physician to examine the results. Manager Buck Showalter didn't provide much information beyond confirming that the left-hander will miss his next turn.
Paredes bent back his wrist after hitting the ground and came out of the game.
"He went back (to Sarasota) early," Showalter said after the Orioles' 10-3 loss to the Rays. "Pretty painful. X-rays tonight and reevaluated tomorrow.
"When he can't continue ... He's a tough guy. That one concerned me a little bit. I hope we get good news. It bent back pretty good."
Matusz complained of discomfort in his lower back after yesterday's outing against the Braves, when he allowed a home run and double and walked a batter in one inning.
"See how he feels tomorrow and see where we are with it. We got the information back and doc's going to look at it when he gets back," Showalter said.
It's too soon for Showalter to give an exact amount of time that Matusz will be sidelined.
"They've talked to me about it, what they think, but let's kind of get there first. His return is not imminent," Showalter said.
Asked if Matusz would go on the disabled list if it were the regular season, Showalter replied, "I wouldn't go that far. It's something that we've got to get our arms around. I don't think we're there yet. Next couple days, see how he responds. But he's not going to be back in there on his normal turn.
"It's kind of strange. I'm really anxious to hear the dynamic of how it all came about."
Miguel Gonzalez stayed healthy today, so that must count as a win despite being charged with seven runs in 1 1/3 innings.
"First outing kind of thing," Showalter said. "He wasn't as crisp as he's going to be. You've got to start somewhere. He's only going to get better, right?"
Dylan Bundy served up a home run to Brandon Guy on his first pitch of the fifth inning, but he retired the next three batters on fly balls.
"That's about as good a velocity as Bundy's had since the surgery. That was good to see," Showalter said.
"There's a little breeze blowing out, but Dylan, I think he's happy he's healthy and not thinking about it every time he cocks his arm. You can tell every time he's thrown, the velocity's gone up a little bit. If he can drive that ball down where he needs to get it, he can be a contributor."
Brothers Caleb Joseph and Corban Joseph played in the same game for the same team for the first time since high school. Corban drew a walk in the ninth inning.
