PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Chaz Roe allowed a two-out run in the third inning on Jaff Decker's double and Brad Miller's RBI single.

I'm just relieved that I haven't written "Jeff Dacker."

Brad-Brach.jpgBrad Brach retired the Rays in order in the fourth inning, but Brandon Guyer hit a long home run to left-center field on Dylan Bundy's first pitch to give Tampa Bay 9-0 lead in the fifth.

Bundy retired the next three batters, with center fielder Joey Rickard making a diving catch to rob Taylor Motte.

The Orioles had two baserunners through five innings, on Rickard's infield single in the first and Ryan Flaherty's bunt single in the third. Paul Janish led off the sixth with a single down the right field line.

Update: The Orioles scored two unearned runs in the sixth against left-hander Dana Eveland. Paul Janish singled. Rickard and L.J. Hoes reached on errors. Christian Walker had a sacrifice fly.

Jimmy Paredes apparently injured his left wrist while trying to make a diving catch in right field in the second inning. The Orioles are sending him for tests.

Pitcher Miguel Gonzalez provided an update

"He's hurting a little bit," Gonzalez said. "I'm not sure. Might be a sprain. I'm sure yet. They're going to go get an MRI or an X-ray.

"It's sad to see a guy go down who's been a good part of our organization and he's been doing great the last couple of years. He's going out there 100 percent every time working hard trying to make a play and that happens. That's pretty sad."

Paredes played the outfield in winter ball and the Orioles are hoping that he can establish himself in the field to increase his value.

"That's why he went to the Dominican to work at it. Playing outfield every day," Gonzalez said.

"He's coming in early in the morning, working hard, early work. And I think that's going to pay off. Hopefully, this is not a big issue and he can move on and do a better job for us. I think he's going to help us out in the outfield. We know what he can do with the bat."

The Rays bats punished Gonzalez, who was charged with seven runs in 1 1/3 innings.

"They didn't even let me breathe out there," he said. "It was tough. They were swinging at that first pitch. The positive side is that I didn't walk anyone and physically I feel fine. I'm ready to go. It was just a tough one to think about. Obviously, the results weren't there. The fastball was up. I'm happy with my fastball and split. Other than that, I'm feeling good.

The first three Rays saw a total of four pitches from Gonzalez.

"I knew they were going to come out and swing it," he said. "It's spring training. They're trying to get their hacks in and we're trying to keep the ball down, but that wasn't the result. We'll work on it and try not to think about it too much."

Former Oriole Steve Pearce had an RBI double in the first inning.

"Pearce, he was a big part of our organization last year and the last couple of years," Gonzalez said. "He's a tough out. I gave him a good pitch to hit, and he took advantage of it, and hopefully I'll get to face him again. I like facing guys that definitely have good talent, very aggressive guy out there."

Gonzalez won't obsess over the results of one exhibition appearance or how the Orioles are coming off back-to-back poor starts, with Ubaldo Jimenez retiring only one Atlanta batter yesterday.

"No, I was aggressive," he said. "We've still got a long way. This is a start for us. Mentally we've got to be strong and forget about this start and hopefully have better results for the next one."
