Intrasquad game scoreless in third inning (game ends scoreless)

SARASOTA, Fla. - You know it's an intrasquad game when Orioles pitchers are told to record more than three outs in an inning. The home team was five up, five down against left-hander T.J. McFarland in the bottom of the first, and the visiting team was four up, four down versus left-hander Wesley Wright in the top of the second. Left-hander Zach Britton induced ground balls from Everth Cabrera, Alejandro De Aza and Nolan Reimold. Wright struck out Matt Tuiasosopo, retired Steve Clevenger on a grounder to the mound, retired Chris Parmelee on a fly ball to left and retired David Lough on a grounder to short. Wright was supposed to pitch for the visiting team, but he's on the home side. Ryan Webb switched to the visitors. Britton threw nine pitches, six for strikes in his inning. wieters-intrasquad-swings.jpgDelmon Young is in midseason form, leading off the bottom of the second with a double off Webb. Jonathan Schoop walked with two outs, but Matt Wieters flied to left field. Wieters grounded out in his first at-bat. Caleb Joseph replaced him in the third. Manny Machado lined to center field against McFarland. Chris Davis bunted back to the mound in his first at-bat. Mike Wright, who switched to the home side, retired Ryan Flaherty and Jayson Nix on ground balls. Cabrera singled to right, but De Aza lined softly to second. norris-photo-day-tall.jpg Update: Young walked against Tim Berry leading off the bottom of the fourth. He's an on-base machine. Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia dazzled in the top of the fourth, striking out Reimold and Tuiasosopo and retiring Ryan Lavarnway on a fly ball to center field. You could hear Garcia's mid-90s fastball popping Joseph's mitt, the sound echoing to the press box. Joseph remains in camp. His wife Brooke is due today with the couple's first child. Update II: You also know it's an intrasquad game when Wieters stops catching and serves as the designated hitter. Wieters struck out against Tyler Wilson, the former University of Virginia pitcher who also retired Schoop and Machado in a clean inning. Berry walked two batters, retired one and was done. Rule 5 pick Logan Verrett retired the first three batters, stayed on the mound and allowed an infield hit to Nix and walked Cabrera. Showalter halted the inning. Update III: The game ended in a scoreless tie after six innings. Hunter Harvey walked Reimold in the top of the sixth and gave up a one-out single to Brian Ward, but he escaped the jam. Chaz Roe retired Michael Almanzar and J.P. Arencibia on ground balls and walked Jimmy Paredes. Dariel Alvarez flied out, but Roe stayed on the mound to face Christian Walker. Walker fouled out to first and Showalter called everyone off the field.
