Jimenez struggles, Orioles blanked 6-0 by Indians

Last season, when he pitched for the Cleveland Indians, Ubaldo Jimenez went 5-2 with an ERA of 1.66 in his last 11 starts at Progressive Field. This outing didn't go quite that well. jimenez-high-knee-white-sidebar.jpgJimenez struggled again and allowed two home runs and six runs as Cleveland blanked the Orioles 6-0 tonight to take the first two games in the series. The Orioles fall to 69-52 and have lost back-to-back games for the first time since June 28-29 against Tampa Bay. Also, the Orioles' eight-series win streak ends as they fall one series victory short of a club-record nine in a row. Jimenez, who leads the American League in walks, issued free passes to the first two hitters tonight. After he recorded an out, Carlos Santana crushed a three-run homer to center. It was No. 21 for Santana on a 2-2 pitch. Jimenez settled down a bit, but then Cleveland added three more runs off him in the fifth. Michael Brantley hit a two-run homer. It was his 18th. Over 4 1/3 innings, Jimenez gave up five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Jimenez, who threw 91 pitches and just 51 for strikes, falls to 4-9 with an ERA of 4.83. The six runs allowed ties his season-high. In two starts against his former team for the Orioles, Jimenez has allowed 11 runs in 8 1/3 innings against Cleveland. Meanwhile, the Orioles could not score off Indians starter Carlos Carrasco, who was making his sixth start. He pitched seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball to improve to 5-4 with an ERA of 3.27. He retired the last 15 batters he faced. The Orioles were blanked on just four hits tonight and have scored just one run on 11 hits in 20 innings in this series. In the series finale on Sunday afternoon, Kevin Gausman (6-4, 3.90 ERA) faces right-hander Danny Salazar (4-5, 4.88 ERA). In a note from the minors tonight, there is a new single-season record-holder for hits at Single-A Delmarva. Shorebirds third baseman Drew Dosch knocked his own manager from atop the record book. When Dosch singled in the ninth inning of Delmarva's 6-2 loss at Hickory, that was his 151st hit. Current Shorebirds skipper Ryan Minor set the record with 150 hits in 1997. In 119 games, Dosch is batting .323 with 21 doubles, four homers and 48 RBIs. Dosch, who hit .364 in July, is batting .341 since the South Atlantic League All-Star break.
