Jonathan Papelbon seeking his release (updated)

The Nationals must make a corresponding move today when they activate right-hander Reynaldo Lopez. Lopez is the starter for tonight's matchup against the Atlanta Braves.

Usually when a pitcher is added to a roster, another hurler is taken off. The bullpen has been pretty consistent up and down this season, except for Jonathan Papelbon, who was demoted from his closer role late last month.

Papelbon going into tunnel sidebar.jpg When Mark Melancon was acquired in a trade from the Pirates, Papelbon was told his role would change with the team. But the Nationals already had the likes of Shawn Kelley, Blake Treinen and Sammy Solis to take care of the eighth inning spot.

So where would that leave Papelbon? In a specialist role? That would be quite the demotion. But if Papelbon was good with it, and would buy into the role, the Nats would continue on.

But according to a report by ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick, Papelbon is reportedly not happy with his new role and wants to be released.

Papelbon has requested his release and #Nationals are trying to figure out best way to do it, industry source says. Could be soon.

Papelbon is signed through the 2016 season at the back end of a five-year, $61 million deal, making him a free agent in 2017. He has a career-worst 4.37 ERA in 37 games this season, with a 2-4 record and 19 saves.

Updated: The Nationals announced they have released Papelbon and called up Lopez.
