Jonathan Schoop on making two key errors in two days

Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop has made four errors this year, and two have come in the last two games. They were both costly in Orioles losses.

In the first inning Sunday, the Orioles were shifting against Toronto's Kendrys Morales, a switch-hitter who was batting right-handed. Positioned on the left field side of second base, Schoop tried to backhand a ground ball and it just kicked out of the heel of his glove. Two batters later, Devon Travis hit a three-run homer. The Blue Jays won, 3-1.

"I have some things to work on," Schoop said of the defensive miscues. "Yesterday was tough defensively for me and I've got to be better. I'll go outside today and work and try to be better from yesterday for sure."

Schoop said he can't blame being in the shift as the reason for Sunday's error. He simply needed to make a pretty routine play, and he didn't.

Sometimes fielders make errors and it doesn't hurt the team on the scoreboard. But for Schoop, both errors have led to runs for the Blue Jays and Twins. Schoop was frustrated times two.

"Especially when it is a play you normally make. And after that they score three runs. It is hard. Those plays I normally make and I make an error and they score runs. You feel like that it is on you. But you just have to let it go and go forward. Defensive mistakes will happen. But you have to mimimize them. One thing you can do is just work on it and get better."

Schoop said he remains a very confident defender, and that the veterans remind him he can't dwell on a past mistake or he might make another one today.

"Yeah. I learned from the veterans. You know, J.J. (Hardy), Jonesey (Adam Jones), Chris (Davis), all those guys help me. You can't get stuck on one thing that happened yesterday so it doesn't happen again."

The Orioles clubhouse was predictably rather quiet after last night's loss, but it was back to normal today. The club is good at quickly moving on to the next game, whether the last one was a big win or tough loss.

"Today is a different day. We flush it out and try and get the win today," Schoop said.
