The Orioles are losing five players in spring training to the World Baseball Classic, including new catcher Welington Castillo, who will need a crash course in getting acclimated to the pitching staff in camp.
Center fielder Adam Jones and reliever Mychal Givens will play for Team USA, Castillo and third baseman Manny Machado will play for the Dominican Republic and second baseman Jonathan Schoop will play for the Netherlands. The rosters were unveiled tonight on MLB Network.
Machado was born in Miami, but his parents and grandparents hail from the Dominican.
Jim Leyland is managing Team USA, which competes against Colombia on March 10, the Dominican on March 11 and Canada on March 12 in the first round.
As previously reported, outfielder Hyun Soo Kim declined an offer to play for South Korea after appearing on the preliminary roster. He's already working out in Sarasota, interrupting his sessions only to appear at FanFest.
Closer Zach Britton declined an offer from Team USA, news that came out during the Winter Meetings.
Former Orioles starter Yovani Gallardo will play for Team Mexico and former first-round draft pick Adam Loewen is part of Team Canada's roster.
Manager Buck Showalter knew that he'd have to excuse at least four players from camp and the Orioles are making the necessary adjustments. They signed infielders Johnny Giavotella and Robert Andino to minor league contracts with spring training invitations to improve their depth in the system and also provide coverage for Schoop and Machado.
Showalter has indicated that he'll slow-play his regulars because of the earlier report dates and additional time spent in camp.
Jones was part of the USA roster in 2013 while Schoop played for the Netherlands and hit two home runs.
Japan won the WBC in 2006 and 2009 and the Dominican emerged victorious in 2013. Team USA has reached the semifinals once, under manager Davey Johnson, in the three tournaments.
The fourth installment of the international competition runs from March 9-22. Sixteen teams from five continents are involved.
Tokyo, Seoul, Miami and Guadalajara will serve as first-round hosts, Tokyo and San Diego will serve as second-round hosts and Los Angeles will host the championship round.
Left-hander Alexander Wells, who registered a 2.15 ERA and 0.91 WHIP last summer in 13 starts with short-season Single-A Aberdeen, joins twin brother Lachlan on Australia's roster.
Schoop will be joined by his brother Sharlon, an Orioles farmhand.
