Adam Jones tested his left hamstring today and decided to stay out of the Orioles lineup for tonight's series opener against the Blue Jays at Camden Yards.
Jones said the leg feels much better, but he doesn't want to be selfish and risk a more serious injury. He remains day-to-day.
"I'm feeling a lot better," Jones said. "I think it's still there and it's still August. We've got a whole month to go and I just think we're being smart with it. Being smart with my legs and making sure that I'm able to do everything that I'm capable of doing in center field and on the base paths.
"I think it was my decision, but collective decision is being smart together. Obviously, we have to work together as a cohesive unit and we're doing it with optimism. I woke up this morning feeling like I could play. I do that every day, but as you get close and closer to reality, you understand it's probably not the smartest thing to go out there and then try to blow it out.
"I feel a lot better than I did when I went off the field the other day in New York. Obviously, time heals most wounds, and in this instance, I think time and our great training staff will help me get back on the field as soon as possible. But one thing I'm not going to do is hurt myself just for one game. I think the most selfish thing to do is say I can play and then have to come out mid-game. I think that's selfish to the team. And personally, I think right now we have confidence that (Nolan) Reimold can go out there and play center field and hold down the fort until I get back."
Jonathan Schoop will bat leadoff for the first time in his career.
Chris Tillman said his right shoulder felt "real good" after playing catch today in the outfield, the first time he's thrown since going on the disabled list with bursitis.
