Joseph on the Tribe's starter, McFarland on his return, Guilmet on his solid pitching (updated)

Cleveland's starting pitcher tonight is 24-year-old left-hander T.J. House. He'll be making his first major league start, but his second start this year against the Baltimore organization. House made his major league debut with a scoreless inning May 17 against Oakland. Before that, he faced the Orioles' Triple-A Norfolk affiliate on April 29, pitching 5 1/3 scoreless innings on eight hits in that game. Norfolk's catcher that game will be Baltimore's catcher tonight. Caleb Joseph, who is batting ninth tonight, went 2-for-3 with two singles in that Triple-A game against House. He's seen this pitcher several times before, in fact. "I've faced him for about five years in the minors, a lot in Double-A," Joseph said this afternoon. "Can get up to about 91, 92 mph and can sink the ball and cut the ball with a changeup. He's begun to pitch more inside to right-handers. We just have to have good at-bats against him, grind it out and get a good pitch to hit." Joseph has made six starts catching for the Orioles since he was called up. The team is 3-3 in those games with an ERA of 3.06. This will be the third time Joseph will catch with Bud Norris on the mound. In the first two games, Norris went a combined 13 innings giving up seven hits and three runs in starts against Tampa Bay and Kansas City. What will be the key in working with Norris tonight? "Establishing the inside part of the plate," Joseph said. "Getting his fastball to both sides with command. Mixing in some changeups and locating the slider when we need it. He's had two really nice starts the past two. Bud's a competitor and will give you his best every time." T.J. McFarland is back in the Orioles clubhouse today to give the team a fresh bullpen arm. He will be activated before tonight's game and a corresponding roster move will have to be made. McFarland went 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA earlier here in three games and figured he might get the call. "Obviously the last couple of days with the bullpen getting used, there was a chance I would be called up. Came in today and got the call, so here I am ready to go," McFarland said. He has been starting at Triple-A Norfolk and is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA in five games and 24 innings with the Tides. "It has helped me tremendously (getting to start)," McFarland said. "I am able to get stretched out a bit and work on the pitches I need to work on. Changeup was one thing I for sure needed to work on." Right-hander Preston Guilmet is one possibility to come off the roster, only because he went 2 1/3 innings last night and is likely unavailable tonight. But as manager Buck Showalter mentioned today, a player going off the roster today could be added back on over the next few days if Chris Davis goes on paternity leave as expected. The removed player would not have to stay in the minors for 10 days. Whether he goes or stays, Guilmet has made a nice impression in his first three Orioles games. He has worked four innings without allowing a runner and struck out four. "Every opportunity counts," Guilmet said. "It's definitely nice to make a good first impression. But obviously I have to continue with that. Anyone that can help the team is valuable." Guilmet was acquired in an April 7 trade from Cleveland for minor leaguer Torsten Boss. Last night, he pitched against his former organization. "Once you get out there, it's all about business. But knowing those guys pretty well, it definitely adds a little different aspect," he said. "It's exciting to see those guys, but once the game starts, you are out to win." Update: Guilmet did get optioned to Triple-A as the O's made that move to get McFarland activated. But as mentioned he could be back soon.
