Justin Lord will be the new pitching coach for Delmarva

The Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds will have a new pitching coach in 2013. Justin Lord has been hired by the Orioles and will join the Shorebirds staff, even though the parent club has not yet announced any coaching assignments for next year. The past two seasons, Lord was pitching coach with the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League. The Miners won the league championship this year. Troy Mattes was the pitching coach the last three seasons at Delmarva and at Bluefield the three years before that. Mattes was not offered a contract by the Orioles for the 2013 season. The 32-year-old Lord, a right-hander, pitched six seasons in the minor leagues including three in the Kansas City and Pittsburgh organizations and three for the independent league St. Paul Saints, going 25-22 with a 4.16 ERA over 385 innings. In 2004, he pitched in two games for Hickory in the same South Atlantic League where he will be coaching next season. In college, he pitched for Chipola (Fla.) Junior College and also at Florida State.
