Kevin Gausman on his start tonight, plus other clubhouse quotes

Kevin Gausman has pitched well several times this year without a lot of run support. He was in a similar spot tonight, but this time he navigated his way through six innings and actually got a win.

Gausman gave up just two hits and got his first victory since Aug. 1 as the Orioles beat Boston 2-0. Gausman has recorded a win in just two of his 14 starts.

Four walks isn't great, but I felt like I pitched well with runners in scoring position. Kind of got myself out of some jams. But anytime you walk a guy to start an inning, you are putting yourself in a bad situation."

After a 29-pitch first inning, Gausman had a 14-pitch second and 12-pitch third. That helped him on his pitch count to get through six innings tonight on 109 pitches.

"Just mixing pitches (was a key)," he said. "Tried to throw a lot of first-pitch strikes. They were pretty patient tonight. I was all over the place at some points in the game. Close pitches ended up being balls and I walked some guys. The biggest thing was throwing my secondary pitches in big spots.

"I knew right after the first inning I probably would not go the distance, but those are situations you have to keep it scoreless for as long as you can. I had really good stuff and I think that is why it was a bit tough commanding it."

In nine career games versus Boston, Gausman is 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA. This season in 10 home games he is now 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA.

Other clubhouse quotes:

Brian Matusz on getting David Ortiz and two lefty hitters out in the eighth: "It was great. In that situation just want to come in and get outs. Get the guys back in the dugout and hand the ball over to Zach (Britton).

"Papi is one of the best hitters in the game. In a situation like that in the eighth inning, you just need to make quality pitches. Just needed to keep the ball down in the zone. Threw him a fastball off the plate and Jonesy was right there, so it worked out.

"We never want to be complacent. Still plenty of season left. We're still in this thing. Take it day by day, stay positive and keep winning."

Adam Jones on Gausman and the win: "Gausman did his job. Kept us on track. (Brad) Brach, (Darren) O'Day and Matusz and finish off with Britton. Pitching sets the tone. If they pump the strike zone, they keep us on our toes and tonight he did that."

Jones on the Orioles winning without a home run: "Hey, chicks dig the longball. There is nothing wrong with trotting around the bases. But any way you can win, you win. Tonight, first inning, man on third base, put the ball in play."

Jones on winning five of six games: "Obviously, we hit a snag in mid-August into September. But we still have games on the schedule and still have fans showing up. We still have pride and are playing for something. Until game 162 when they say you have to go home, we're going to play hard."

Catcher Caleb Joseph on Gausman: "He really commanded the fastball and threw some good sinkers when he needed to. He came inside with authority. Kept them off-balance for the most part. Pitch count got a little high with foul balls, but he battled and did a good job working out of some jams."
