According to a team source, prospect third baseman Anthony Rendon, who fractured his ankle in early April, remains immobilized and has yet to begin physical therapy on that ankle. Rendon is maintaining a workout regimen to strengthen his legs, core and arms, but nothing yet to his left ankle.
Left-hander Matt Purke has thrown three innings within the last week in Florida and looks to be a couple of weeks from returning to the Nationals' minor league system. Purke has been lengthened out and is building strength as he gets ready to return, according to a Nationals team source.
The reason for Purke's attendance in extended spring training has not been detailed but it's certainly a good sign that he's pitching again and could be back in late May.
Low Single-A Hagerstown Suns outfielder Brian Goodwin also has been playing games in three-inning increments in Florida and could be back in about one week. Goodwin has been recovering from a quad injury suffered in a game April 9.
It seems that Rendon is still further away from returning to baseball-related activities, but to hear that Purke and Goodwin are working three-inning clips is the most positive update we've had on those players in some time. It is a good chance now that both will be back in one level of Single-A in early June.
