Rhyne Hughes tied a Triple-A Norfolk record last night by striking out five times. Then he hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Tides a 4-3 win over Pawtucket. Left-hander Troy Patton improved to 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA by allowing one hit over four scoreless innings. He retired nine straight batters and 10 of the last 11 that he faced. Then he flew to Baltimore, sat at one of the lockers for a few hours and flew back to Norfolk. Pedro Viola threw two scoreless innings in his first game with Double-A Bowie since the Orioles optioned him. I posed the leadoff question earlier this morning. Will it be J.J. Hardy or Robert Andino? Manager Buck Showalter chose Hardy yesterday because Andino and Felix Pie were out of the lineup. "We have kind of pieced that spot together until we get Brian (Roberts) back, and that's probably the least disruptive to the rest of the group," Showalter said. "And he's swinging the bat well. We don't have really a conventional guy." They won't have Roberts for a while. Showalter didn't dismiss the idea that Roberts could return before the All-Star break, but time's running out. The good news, though, is that Roberts isn't having gluteus spasms. They're the new "oblique strain." The Orioles are going for the sweep tonight against a team that has lost eight games in a row, a team that routinely pants them and steals their lunch money in Oakland. Drop the hammer. Vladimir Guerrero has hit in 22 of his last 25 games, posting a .356 average with 18 RBIs. He's batting .359 with 10 extra-base hits in his last 25 games. Still waiting for Nick Markakis' first extra-base hit since May 15, when he had a double and home run in Tampa. He's gone 84 at-bats without one. He says he's healthy. The Orioles say he's healthy. Costa, a pitcher/outfielder, was named Class 3A-2A-1A Player of the Year after going 9-1 with a 2.52 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 69 1/3 innings. He also batted .390 with two homers and 16 RBIs. In the 32nd round, the Orioles selected right-hander Ryan Meyer of Oviedo (Fla.) High. And in the 33rd round, they grabbed a local product, right-hander Sander Beck of the University of Maryland.
