Light on actual movement, Winter Meetings are heavy on speculation

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The second day of baseball's Winter Meetings were light on moves, but, as usual, heavy on speculation.

The biggest move on Tuesday involved the Yankees, who traded third baseman Chase Headley to the Padres, leaving them without a proven third baseman, as well as an established second baseman. The Yankees traded second baseman Starlin Castro to the Marlins in the deal that brought Giancarlo Stanton to the Bronx.

So what will the Yankees do?

For now, the Yankees have prospects lined up to play both positions, but it is difficult to think they will go into next season with inexperienced players at two positions.

If the season started today, the third baseman would be Miguel Adújar, 23, and the second baseman Gleyber Torres, 20, a prospect they acquired from the Cubs in the 2016 trade that sent closer Aroldis Chapman to Chicago.

Andújar went 4-for-7 last season for the Yankees while Torres played at Double-A and Triple-A before injuring the elbow in his non-throwing arm. It caused him to miss the second half of the season.

The Yankees saved about $13 million by trading Headley, and they'd like to use that money for another starting pitcher and still stay under the luxury tax of $197 million. But they could also sign a third baseman, and bringing Todd Frazier back to the Bronx is possible.

* Former major league catcher and manager Bob Boone, who works in the Nationals front office and is the father of new Yankees manager Aaron Boone, was on the golf course when his son called to announce that he had gotten the job. Boone, who managed in Kansas City and Cincinnati, said he offered at least one piece of advice to his son: Make spring training travel rules. "I asked him, 'What are you going to do if Giancarlo Stanton asks if he can drive to a spring training game,' " Bob Boone says. "A manager has so many decisions to make." ... Aaron Boone said that his dad has started to tear up more in his old age, but he also expects to get more managing advice during Christmas.

* Cubs manager Joe Maddon said that his former bench coach in Chicago and Tampa Bay, Dave Martinez, is more than ready to be a big league manager, even though Martinez has no experience. "He's very good at what he does," Maddon said. "He's going to be very good at in-game management. He's a good outfield instructor. He can help with the hitting. It is his time. He's ready to get the job done."

* The Giants lost 98 games last season, and this offseason, they need bats and run production. They wanted Stanton, but he refused the trade. The Giants need two outfielders and a third baseman, so they are looking at any power bats at those positions. In other words, they're looking at J.D. Martinez, Mike Moustakas and Frazier. Currently, their third baseman is Pablo Sandoval.

* The Twins, a surprise team that won a wild card last season, have a set lineup, but they are looking for rotation and bullpen help. They've been linked to free agents Yu Darvish, Lance Lynn and Alex Cobb in the rotation, and Brandon Kintzler to be the closer. They've also checked in with the Pirates to see if they can swing a trade for pitcher Gerrit Cole, who would be under team control through 2020. The Twins figure they can challenge the Indians in the American League Central by adding to a ration that has Ervin Santana, José Berríos and Kyle Gibson.

* After a postseason where the Astros used starters Justin Verlander, Charlie Morton and Lance McCullers in relief roles to win the World Series, the team is looking for relief pitchers. The Astros lineup isn't going to change, but the Astros would like more pitchers in the bullpen and could be going after Tony Watson, Addison Reed and Kintzler.

* The Dodgers aren't expected to make any major moves. They are basically out of the mood for spending and their biggest concern is keeping pitcher Clayton Kershaw's back healthy. An injured back has put Kershaw on the disabled list in each of the last two seasons.

* The Marlins are starting over financially, and even though they traded Stanton's $295 contract to the Yankees, they still have a chance to trade their two remaining outfielders, Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna. Both are solid hitters with good power and strong defense. The Marlins haven't been begun to think about who is going to replace Stanton.
