Lineup change, Showalter on Lee, Hays and Barlow

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles have made another lineup change today, with Chris Davis switching from first base to the designated hitter role. Mark Trumbo will play first base.

The order remains the same, with Davis batting fifth and Trumbo seventh.

No reason given for the change, but manager Buck Showalter hinted at the possibility during batting practice.

Left-hander Chris Lee's attempt to break camp with the team lasted two pitches.

Lee exited yesterday's game against the Rays with an injury to his right oblique, which an MRI confirmed. Showalter said Lee, who retired Denard Span on a ground ball and walked off the field, could miss at least four weeks.

"He's still going to get an opportunity, but it certainly takes him out of the mix here. We were really looking forward to getting him some good looks and seeing if he could start taking strides toward the pitcher that his pure arm tells you he could be. A lot of other things he's got to improve on, but that kind of pushes that timetable back."

The Orioles could sent Lee to extended spring training.

Austin Hays could return to the outfield within three days after an MRI on his right shoulder didn't reveal anything serious beyond some inflammation. Hays was switched from right fielder to designated hitter yesterday.

"I didn't like the fact that he was really progressing well and was ready to play right field yesterday and over there during BP he had a little step back, so we wanted to make sure there wasn't something structural, so that came out good," Showalter said.

"He's got some inflammation there in the back of his shoulder. We're probably going to give him three days, try to get that out of there. Hopefully, he'll be back in the time period they're talking about. They haven't made up their mind. They're thinking about an injection or not. I don't know what they're going to do."

Hays could be available to hit. Showalter will check with the athletic training staff before deciding on Thursday whether to use Hays as the designated hitter, "to see if that would irritate it or not."

The Orioles wore their orange LUNGevity t-shirts at batting practice to honor former public relations director Monica Pence Barlow, who died four years ago today after a long and courageous battle with stage 4 lung cancer.

It doesn't seem like four years have passed.

"No," Showalter said. "I remember it like yesterday when I got told right up there in that hallway. You know what's funny? Sometimes we have events and stuff and you kind of have to pull teeth a little bit to make sure everyone ... this thing always comes together quickly. Even the guys who weren't here when she was here, they hear enough about Monica.

"It's good and bad. It's good that you can do something that brings some recognition to a cause, but it's also a reminder of why we're doing it. I'd rather have her here."
