Machado trying to regain April stroke (O's win 6-4)

CLEVELAND - Orioles manager Buck Showalter continues to juggle the lineup in an attempt to slow down the strikeout pace and end a losing streak that's reached four games.

Adam Jones is leading off, Hyun Soo Kim has moved up to second while starting for the third consecutive night and Manny Machado is batting third.

Machado also has hit leadoff and second, but he's stuck with one position since shortstop J.J. Hardy fouled a ball off his left foot and suffered a hairline fracture.

All things aren't equal when it comes to Machado's position switch. He was batting .379/.427/.684 with 11 doubles, six home runs and 15 RBIs in 23 games at third base, and .233/.347/.547 with six doubles, seven home runs and 13 RBIs in 23 games at shortstop.

Trying to heat up again, Machado delivered an RBI single into center field tonight after Jones led off with a single up the middle and Kim was hit on the foot by a Trevor Bauer pitch.

A dropoff of some magnitude was expected after Machado batted .344/.394/.667 in April. He was 3-for-17 in his last five games and 7-for-45 in his last 12 before the single.

Fans want to know whether the move to shortstop has cooled off Machado at the plate. It could simply be that Machado was due to struggle.

"First of all, at the clip that Manny was playing, that would have been almost historical to continue that all year," Showalter said.

"You knew that was going to have a hard time. But sure, it's a challenge. Not that it's easy playing third, but there's a lot more of a mental grind playing shortstop. I think it really gives you even more respect for what J.J. can do. But he's capable of doing it.

"I know he enjoys it and we're looking forward to playing on a better surface here in Cleveland."

Chris Davis walked on seven pitches to load the bases with no outs. Mark Trumbo and Nolan Reimold struck out, but Jonathan Schoop grounded a two-run single into center field to increase the lead to 3-0.

Flaherty lined to center field on Bauer's 32nd pitch to end the inning.

Update: The Indians scored in the second on back-to-back doubles by Jose Ramirez and Juan Uribe.

Wright has thrown 37 pitches in two innings. Jones, Machado and Schoop are 2-for-2.

Update II: Mike Napoli homered deep into the left field seats leading off the bottom of the fourth to cut the Orioles' lead to 3-2. Estimated distance was 422 feet.

Update III: The Indians tied the game in the fifth on Francisco Lindor's sacrifice fly after the Indians loaded the bases with no outs. Jason Kipnis struck out and Lindor battled back from being down 0-2 in the count to fly to right-center on a 3-2 pitch.

Wright allowed three runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings, with two walks, four strikeouts and a home run. He threw 99 pitches, 60 for strikes, in his shortest outing of the season.

Update IV: Machado and Chris Davis doubled in the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and Mark Trumbo followed with a two-run homer down the right field line, his 15th of the season.

Machado is 4-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.

Dylan Bundy tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings after allowing seven runs and nine hits over his last three outings spanning 4 1/3 innings.

Update V: Lindor homered off Darren O'Day leading off the bottom of the eighth to reduce the Orioles' lead to 6-4. The Indians put runners on second and third with no outs and loaded the bases with one out, but they failed to score again.

Update VI: The Orioles snap a four-game losing streak with a 6-4 win over the Indians.

Bundy gets credit for his first major league win. Zach Britton records his 13th save after retiring the side in order in the ninth.

Jones collects three singles as the leadoff hitter.
