The Yankees lost today, which would enable the Orioles to pass them in the wild card standings with a win today in Toronto.
The Orioles are wearing their black jerseys instead of the usual orange on Saturday. They won last night. Superstitious?
Last night, Chris Davis hit his 50th home run. Today, Manny Machado hit his 50th double.
Apparently, 50 is the new ... 50.
Machado, Brian Roberts and Miguel Tejada are the only Orioles with 50 or more doubles in a season. Roberts holds the record with 56 set during the 2009 season.
Machado scored in the first inning on Davis' double to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead. Blue Jays left fielder Anthony Gose raced toward the line and almost made a diving catch. The ball got away from him, and the Orioles - unlike last night - aren't the team playing from behind.
Davis has 91 extra-base hits this season, one shy of Brady Anderson's club record set in 1996.
It's a good thing Anderson considers Davis a friend. This could get personal.
Davis is now batting .346 with six doubles, seven homers and 17 RBIs in 52 at-bats against the Blue Jays this season. He's hitting .400 with five doubles, four homers and nine RBIs in 30 at-bats at Rogers Centre.
Is that good?
Update: And now the Orioles are playing from behind.
Moises Sierra's two-out double in the bottom of the first scored Jose Reyes and Adam Lind to give Toronto a 2-1 lead.
Lind reached on a two-out walk to keep the inning alive.
The Orioles had scored only one first-inning run for Tillman this season before today. Tillman has allowed nine runs in the opening frame.
Update II: Machado tied the game in the third inning with his 14th home run of the season.
Machado fouled off a slider and launched the next one, giving him 52 multi-hit games this season.
Update III: And now the Jays are playing from behind again.
Matt Wieters' RBI single in the fourth gave the Orioles a 3-2 lead.
Nick Markakis and J.J. Hardy walked with one out and Wieters produced his 72nd RBI to break a tie with Machado.
