Mata clears waivers; this and that (updated)

I have a few items to pass along on this rainy day, starting with the sad news that Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson died today as a result of complications from dementia. He was 76. RIP Captain Hook. Reliever Frank Mata cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk. He's taken off the 40-man roster to make room for pitcher Jason Berken, who was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list. And you thought today would be void of news. Update: I should mention that Mata becomes a minor league free agent at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday. Does he get an extra hour because of the time change? Former Orioles pitcher Bruce Chen reportedly is looking for a multi-year contract. The Royals, his most recent team, are looking at each other in disbelief. You're running out of time if you have between $150,000 and $200,000 to spend on a Honus Wagner baseball card. Sister Virginia Muller of the Baltimore-based School Sisters of Notre Dame is looking to sell one, and the auction ends today. It's a pretty interesting story, if you've missed it. Catcher Caleb Joseph, who spent the summer at Double-A Bowie, hit a double into right-center field yesterday that looked like it would produce two runs for the Scottsdale Scorpions. But his Baysox teammate, Ryan Adams, and Bryce Harper were tagged out at home plate. Almost simultaneously. Apparently, Adams went back to tag up and Harper caught up to him. The Surprise catcher was, well, surprised that both runners arrived at the same time. Yes, Aubrey Huff is serious about that red rally thong. Check this out if you're not too squeamish. (Warning: He reaches down his pants. Shocking, I know.) Sounds like Huff plans on staying with the Giants. The Giants should plan on ordering more hand sanitizer.
