Matusz allows one run in five innings (O's trail 2-1)

SARASOTA, Fla. - Left-hander Brian Matusz wasn't especially sharp today, allowing seven hits and walking his first spring batter over five innings, but the damage was minimal. The Phillies managed only one run, on former Oriole Ty Wigginton's single in the first inning that scored former Oriole Lou Montanez. Matusz was aided by three double plays over the first three innings. Matusz struck out three batters, raising his spring total to 16 over 15 innings. In his last three starts, Matusz has allowed one run, walked one and struck out 13 in 13 innings. Matusz's fastball was mostly 91 mph today. He hit 92 mph a few times. John Mayberry Jr. almost hit a two-run homer in the fourth, but the ball died at the left field fence. It sure looked like it was gone when it left his bat. Michael Martinez doubled to lead off the fifth, but he was thrown out at third when first baseman Chris Davis raced in to field pitcher Roy Halladay's bunt and made a strong throw to Mark Reynolds. The Orioles tied the game off Halladay in the bottom of the first when Nolan Reimold was hit by a pitch and raced home on Adam Jones' two-out double. Jones singled in the fourth but was erased on a double play. J.J. Hardy singled to lead off the fifth before Halladay retired the next three batters. Kevin Gregg replaced Matusz and gave up two doubles in the sixth, but the Phillies didn't score. Hunter Pence was thrown out 9-4-5 trying for a leadoff triple. Nick Markakis fired the ball to Robert Andino. That's good to see. Update: Jim Johnson allowed the tie-breaking run in the seventh by hitting Michael Martinez with one out and surrendering Freddy Glavis' two-out triple past Jones. Ryan Flaherty replaced Markakis in right after the sixth.
