Matusz talks about his outing (updated twice)

SARASOTA, Fla. - We're still scoreless through six innings. Josh Bell doubled off the fence in right-center field leading off the bottom of the sixth, but he never made it past second base. Left fielder Jason Repko made a lunging catch to rob Nick Markakis and hold Bell at second. The wind knocked down Bell's ball. It looked like a home run when it left his bat. Rule 5 pick Adrian Rosario threw a scoreless fifth. Bell started a dazzling 3-6-1 double play. Josh Rupe gave up a leadoff single in the sixth, but he held the Twins scoreless. Rupe's fastball was clocked at 93-94 mph. Both teams have four hits. Mark Reynolds singled in the fifth inning for his first spring hit. Markakis singled in the fourth and Luke Scott walked, but Vladimir Guerrero grounded into a double play. Nick Green is playing left field. Left-hander Brian Matusz was pleased with his outing. "It was good," he said. "I was excited to get out there. Everyone's excited to get out there for the first time and see how you're body's going to feel. And honestly, I felt good. I was warming up in the bullpen and was telling (Matt) Wieters, 'Wow, I feel really calm and relaxed.' "I wanted to go out there and try not to overdo it. I wanted to go out and attack the zone like I did last spring. That was my goal. And when I got out there, I felt good. I felt like I had all my stuff warming up. I got a little antsy, I got a little jumpy with some of my breaking pitches, where I wasn't taking my time. I was kind of rushing through it and not hitting my spots, but I was able to settle myself down. I got a couple three-ball counts, which I'd love to avoid, but I was able to make some good pitches when I needed to. And the best part about it is I feel healthy, I feel strong, and having this outing makes me even more excited about getting out there the next time. "I threw everything today. I like that Wieters went back-to-back changeups. I bounced the first one because I was a little bit tense and overdid it. The next one, I left it up high because I was too soft with it. And I threw a changeup later that was actually a nice one. I threw everything. I threw a couple curveballs in there for strikes, which was nice. I threw a slider hard down in the zone where I got a strikeouts, which was good, too. So I felt like I used everything. It's tough in two innings to do everything you want to do, but it felt real good. "It was a good feeling standing out there on the mound and looking at who was out there on the field. Seeing B-Rob (Brian Roberts) healthy and seeing Reynolds there at third and J.J. (Hardy) at short, and I'm excited to get (Derrek) Lee out there to play first base. Just seeing those guys got me pumped up, excited. It's just going to be a fun year, and I can't even put into words how excited I am about this season and the guys that we have. It's a nice stepping on that mound and seeing those seven guys behind you and Wieters behind the plate." Update: Wynn Pelzer escaped a jam in the top of the seventh, and former Oriole Jim Hoey blanked the Orioles in the bottom half. He caught Vladimir Guererro's liner up the middle for the first out. Reynolds looped a single into left-center field for his second hit of the day, but Adam Jones grounded into a double play. Hoey's fastball was hitting 96-97 mph. Chorye Spoone is pitching the eighth, and he just gave up a leadoff single. Bell has moved to third base. Update II: Brian Dozier broke the scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly off Spoone, who allowed hits to the first two batters. Tyler Henson made a diving catch to rob Dozier. Luke Hughes added an RBI single off Spoone. Twins 2, Orioles 0.
