Miguel Gonzalez says he's healthy and ready to put the 2015 season behind him

Isn't it nice to wake up and not wonder if the Orioles will announce the Hyun Soo Kim signing or whether he failed the physical or whether his name is spelled correctly?

We're told to lose the hyphen and capitalize the "S" in Soo. Who am I to argue?

Kim never was in real danger of failing his physical, though I understand why some of you experienced Grant Balfour flashbacks. I don't flinch at them because it's a reminder that I broke that story. Not a lot of fun, but still a biggie.

Anyway, I'm told that Kim had another "follow up" to his physical Tuesday that caused the delay in announcing the deal. The Orioles are thorough. Kim probably is walking around now convinced that he'll live to be 100.

The Orioles still want plenty for the holidays and their list includes a healthy Miguel Gonzalez in 2016.

They remain interested in Yovani Gallardo and Scott Kazmir, among others, but Gonzalez must bounce back from an injury-marred and disappointing season. He's still part of the rotation and still potentially a bargain at $4.9 million, his projected salary by MLBTradeRumors.com as one of the Orioles' unsigned arbitration-eligible players.

Consider the contracts handed out to other starters and then check Gonzalez's numbers before this year. He was 30-21 with a 3.45 ERA in 75 games (69 starts) over his first three seasons with the Orioles. The biggest knock was how he hadn't worked more than 171 1/3 innings, and his stated goal last spring was to reach 200 innings, as Chris Tillman had done twice.

Miguel Gonzalez throwing black.jpgGonzalez was limited to 144 2/3 innings over 26 starts this year because he made two trips to the disabled list with a strained right groin muscle and right shoulder tendinitis. His 4.91 ERA and 1.396 WHIP easily were the highest of his career.

"Well, now I'm healthy," Gonzalez said at FanFest. "I'm ready to go again. I've been working out for the past three weeks, trying to get back to schedule. Obviously, I finished with an injury last season and came back and threw one of the last games and felt a little better, but now I'm feeling good.

"You think about it. No one wants to be hurt, especially what happened last year with us. The second half wasn't too good for us. You always want to go out there and compete and you want to do well, and when you can't it's really tough."

Gonzalez made only one start after Aug. 30, allowing three earned runs (four total) in 3 2/3 innings on Sept. 30 against the Blue Jays.

Each story about Gonzalez seems to take us back to his physical condition. It's a recurring theme.

"I think if I'm healthy I'll be able to perform and give our team a chance to win ballgames," he said.

Gonzalez trained again in California with vice president of baseball operations Brady Anderson before heading to Mexico to attend a wedding.

"I worked out with him for about 10 days and he gets us going," Gonzalez said. "Obviously, he's always there for us and we really appreciate what he does for us."
