Minor league rosters and schedules, plus the word on Wasdin

While the Orioles' spring training camp has been very busy at the Ed Smith Stadium complex in Sarasota, Fla., the minor league camp has been humming along across town at the Twin Lakes Park complex.

Dozens of minor league players are preparing for their own seasons - many, of course, with hopes of reaching the major leagues. Some have already been there. Today, minor league camp takes another step forward with the beginning of games. The Orioles players will play four games each day, with two of their teams at home and two on the road.

The schedule and game times are listed below as is the very long roster of minor league players. The latest to sign was 25-year-old right-handed pitcher Andrew Bellatti. A 12th-round draft pick of Tampa Bay in 2009, he pitched in the majors for the Rays in 2015, going 3-1 with a 2.31 ERA in 17 games. Last year, he was rehabbing a shoulder injury and went 0-3 with a 6.91 ERA at three levels of the minors. The Orioles also have added 22-year-old Austin Leyritz. He is the son of Jim Leyritz, who played for seven teams over 11 seasons in the majors.

Listed below is the schedule of spring training games for the Orioles' four full-season affiliates. Teams representing Triple-A Norfolk, Double-A Bowie, Single-A Frederick and Single-A Delmarva will play games. Each day, two of the teams will be home and two others away. When you see "A" listed as home or away, that is both Single-A teams playing two games against the same opponent, either home or away.

If you see any minor league lineups over the next few days, don't put too much stock into what we see just yet, as the rosters are not yet final for opening day. There could be many changes and shuffling of players as more players are cut from major league camp and make their way to minor league camp.

Home games are free and open to the public and start at either noon or 1 p.m. at the Buck O'Neil Baseball Complex at Twin Lakes Park. A group of 37 players began an early minor league camp at that facility on Feb. 17. The bulk of the minor league players reported either on March 3 (pitchers and catchers) or March 7 (position players).

March 15 - Minnesota: AAA/AA away, A home at noon
March 16 - Boston: AAA/AA home at 1 p.m., A away
March 17 - Minnesota: AAA/AA away, A home at noon
March 18 - Boston: AAA/AA home at 1 p.m., A away

The word on Wasdin: When the Orioles announced their minor league coaching staffs on Friday, they officially named John Wasdin as their minor league pitching coordinator. He succeeds Rick Peterson who held a similar role for the last five seasons.

Heading up minor league pitching is obviously an important position and Wasdin will oversee not only every minor league pitcher but the respective pitching coaches at each affiliate, as well.

Wasdin spent 12 years in the major leagues with seven teams, including the 2001 Orioles. He went 1-1 with a 4.17 ERA in 26 games. Wasdin also pitched in Japan in 2002 and 2009.

Now 44, Wasdin was Oakland's first-round pick (No. 25 overall) in 1993. He spent the last six years as a pitching coach in the Oakland organization, the last two years with Double-A Midland. His 2016 staff there posted an ERA of 3.46 ERA to lead the Texas League.

Orioles director of player development Brian Graham was part of the hiring process in bringing Wasdin to the Orioles.

"What makes John Wasdin special is he has an ability to communicate and he has a personality that really meshes with every type of pitcher," Graham said. "He has tremendous experience. You look at his background and how many years he pitched and where he pitched. He was in Japan, he pitched all the way up through the minor leagues and into the majors. He was a starter. He was a reliever. He's done everything that a pitcher can do.

"He had really good success as a Double-A pitching coach over in Oakland and we all have background with him. Buck (Showalter) had him in the big leagues and Dan (Duquette) had him in Boston. He pitched for the Orioles in the big leagues and played on the same team as Brady Anderson. I had him as a minor league free agent in Pittsburgh when I was the farm director there. We all had some experience with him and all knew what kind of character he has and what kind work ethic and what kind of communicator he was. He ended up being a great choice."

I asked Graham what impressed him and the Orioles management when Wasdin interviewed for the job.

"His knowledge of pitching and his 100 percent complete understanding of how to develop a pitcher," Graham said. "You take their individual skills and build on them. It was special that this guy really understood how to develop a pitcher. He is easy to like because he is sincere and genuine and has a good work ethic.

"I think what he is going to do is take the strengths of every single pitcher and maximize them. He is definitely not a guy that is going to try and make all the pitchers use the same delivery or have all of them try and be the same type of pitcher. He will take each guy individually and make each the very best pitcher they can be based on their ability."

Graham said he also expects Wasdin to build a strong relationship with the pitching coaches in Baltimore.

"He is going to be right in line with Roger McDowell and Alan Mills from the big leagues on down," Graham said. "That is what is going to be special about John. It goes to everything from the delivery to mechanics to the in-season throwing program and bullpen routines. There is so much that goes into a pitcher's daily routine and we'll be the same (in the minors) as we are in the big leagues."
