More changes coming to Orioles front office and scouting

The Orioles sorted through their Halloween candy last night and found a bunch of Whoppers and Dum Dums. One family sneaked in a box of raisins. Someone else gave out apples.

I got a rock.

A new month leaves several Orioles employees without contracts, the expiration dates striking at midnight.

The front office already is undergoing significant changes while the Orioles decide on a president of baseball operations, a hire that will come from outside the organization. They haven't shifted gears. They aren't promoting an executive and handing him a new title.

We continue to wait. Continue to wonder about the general manager and the manager and new hires on the coaching staff.

I'm still asked about managerial candidates and I continue to stress that it would be a false list without a president in place to make that decision. The same is true of the general manager. It's up to the president.

Former Yankees and Dodgers assistant general manager Kim Ng interviewed Sunday with the Giants for the role of team president. Is she a potential GM candidate with the Orioles? Yes, depending on who's hired as president. Have the Orioles contacted her? No, because they don't have a president.

It really is that simple. The club hasn't reached out to her, according to sources. Maybe later.

Former Red Sox GM Ben Cherington also is a potential candidate in Baltimore. But again ... see above.

The decision on a GM could come quickly after the president is hired because this individual already will have someone in mind.

In the meantime, director of player development Brian Graham will represent the Orioles at the GM meetings on Nov. 6-8 in Carlsbad, Calif. Few trades are consummated at this event - it's more about off-the-field issues - but the groundwork can be laid for serious discussions at the Winter Meetings.

I've already reported that senior advisor Joe McIlvaine, special assistant Matt Haas, East Coast scouting supervisor Kirk Fredriksson, special assignment scout Wayne Britton, area scout Dana Duquette, director of Dominican baseball operations Nelson Norman and Triple-A Norfolk manager Ron Johnson won't return next season. More moves are coming.

There must be a teardown before a rebuild, a process that began at the non-waiver trade deadline and is gaining steam.

The Orioles aren't commenting and no announcements have been made, but I've heard that John Stockstill, Lee Thomas and Jeremy Kapstein won't have their contracts renewed.

Stockstill has been in the organization since 2005, serving this season as a major league scout. He's handled a variety of roles, including director of player personnel, director of international scouting and director of player development.

Thomas was a special assistant and Kapstein an advisor to former executive vice president Dan Duquette, whose departure figured to affect several employees.

I've also heard that professional scout Ron Schueler won't return next season.

Schueler was a finalist for the GM job in 2002 after the Orioles dismissed Syd Thrift. He spent 10 seasons as White Sox GM - he traded Sammy Sosa to the Cubs for George Bell in 1992 - and served in various special assistant capacities with the Cubs, Cardinals, Athletics and Nationals.
