More on Orioles' home run binge (O's win 12-2)

For only the second time in franchise history, the Orioles have hit multiple home runs off three different pitchers in the same game. It also happened on May 17, 1967 in Boston. The Orioles hit three homers off Dennis Bennett and two off Galen Cisco and Bill Landis in a 12-8 victory. hardy flaherty highfive sidebar.jpgThat nugget was provided by the Orioles' PR department. Jim Palmer lasted only one inning in that game, allowing three runs and four hits. Bill Dillman got the win with five innings of relief. Got to plead ignorant here. I never heard of him. The Orioles scored nine runs in the seventh inning. The Orioles are 13-1 when hitting six or more home runs in a game, the only loss coming on Aug. 28, 2007. The opposing pitcher was Tampa Bay's Jason Hammel. Barring a huge comeback by the Cardinals tonight, the Orioles will improve to 14-1. The Orioles hit two home runs off Cardinals starter Justin Masterson, two off left-hander Nick Greenwood and two off left-hander Sam Freeman. Here's a quote from former catcher Chris Hoiles on the Orioles' turnaround after 14 straight losing seasons: "Unlike B.J. (Surhoff), I didn't live here at the time, but being an ex-player and being here as long as I was, you stay in contact and watch. It was very hard. I had to leave at the end of the '98 season. My last year was spring training in '99. Unfortunately, I had a hip injury that made me leave the game earlier than I wanted to, but when you leave, that's one of the hardest things, seeing an organization you played with struggle the way it did. And mostly through the 2000s it was a struggle. "I think they definitely have some people in place right now with Dan (Duquette) and obviously with Buck (Showalter) coming in. And Brady (Anderson) has been a huge part of it right now. I think they're starting to put people in place the last few years that are rebuilding the system from the ground up, and it's a lot better to watch now than what it was." Update: Game over. The Orioles defeat the Cardinals 12-2. The Orioles are 66-49 overall and 31-25 at home.
