Nationals pitching prospect Brad Meyers, who was limited to just six starts last season due to a foot injury, continues to steadily work his way back each day of spring training in Viera, Fla.
"He has responded very well to treatment," Nationals director of player development Doug Harris said. "He is taking regular repetitions. We are cautiously optimistic."
Harris said the right-handed Meyers is recovering from a foot problem similar to what Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia went through.
"It is a very unique and specific injury," Harris said. "We have had the best doctors look at it. The kid has been fabulous since day one as he tries to get better. He has played catch every day. He has had his side sessions every day."
"We are building Meyers to be a starter. It is a very fragile situation with the foot, so we want to alleviate some of the discomfort (by taking the process slowly)."
Meyers is scheduled to start in a game today in the first day of full-squad workouts at the Nationals' minor league camp. He has already been pitching in games in the accelerated camp.
Harris is excited about the progress all of the young players have made so far as camp moves into high gear with a full complement of rosters available.
"It is a true minor league spring training beginning (today)," Harris said.
