No interest in Davis, early Showalter (updated)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Orioles sent a scout to watch left-hander Doug Davis audition for teams Thursday in Arizona, but they have no interest in signing him. Team officials are encouraged by Justin Duchscherer's progress and currently believe they have enough internal pitching options. Brad Bergesen's bruised right forearm isn't a major concern. The Orioles must set their opening night roster by 4 p.m. Thursday. Ryan Drese served up a leadoff home run to Ben Zobrist in the first inning. Johnny Damon followed with a liner up the middle that almost hit Drese. Evan Longoria bounced into a 5-4-3 double play and Manny Ramirez struck out looking. Rays 1, Orioles 0. Update: The Rays had two runs and four hits after sending six batters to the plate. Head athletic trainer Richie Bancells accompanied pitching coach Mark Connor to the mound to check on Drese, who stayed in the game and completed the second inning. Jason Berken is warming in the bullpen. Brian Roberts hit his first spring home run in the third, and it was an impressive shot to right field. Rays 2, Orioles 1. Here are some pre-game comments from manager Buck Showalter: On Justin Duchscherer: "I know on the 6th he's probably going to pitch in extended spring. The clubs have broken and we'd rather keep him in the warmer weather there. Just trying to match up the minor league schedule. Like I said, if everything goes well, he'll join us on the 21st, but we're getting way ahead of ourselves. Let's see him get through the first one." On Brad Bergesen: "Considering the way it went down, they got the ice on it real quick. I was expecting to see more swelling, I tell you, it looks pretty good. May have dodged a bullet there in more ways than one. He didn't dodge it very good. He's scheduled to pitch - we're thinking about bringing him back on three days. He only threw four pitches. We'll know something the next couple of days." On Koji Uehara being ready for the opener: "If he stays on track physically." On setting the roster: "We don't have to (set the roster) ... I think it's 4 p.m. on the 31st. We might take all that time. There's a lot of different ways to go. The bench, there's some moving parts there. The outfield, try to nail that down. I really wouldn't categorize one over the other. The bullpen's starting to take shape, with a couple tweaks. Waiting to see a couple things." On Chris Tillman: "He's going to be pitching for the Orioles this year. We like him and we think he's got a big upside. Where he starts this year isn't going to be completely predicated on how he pitches tomorrow. I'm not going to put that on him publicly." On Nolan Reimold: "He's a good player. Like seven or eight other guys we get asked about, he's got everything you look for in potential. That's why we like him. He's done a lot of things to make people continue to think good things about him. I'm glad I got to see him completely healthy and in a good frame of mind. I didn't see some of the things (last year) that I've seen here in camp."
