No offense, no win: O's bats quiet again in another loss in Oakland

For the Orioles, it was yet another night when they didn't get enough offense. Not nearly enough. New Oriole left-hander Wade Miley pitched a strong game. But as with Kevin Gausman last night, the Orioles plated just one run while Miley was out there and Oakland beat the Orioles 2-1. The Orioles were held to three hits, going 3-for-29 at-bat tonight.

The Orioles could have gained on Toronto, which lost to Tampa Bay. But failed to do so and fell to 63-49 and remain in a first-place tie atop the American League East. The Orioles fall to 2-3 on this road trip and to 24-32 in road games.

In their two wins on this trip, the Orioles hit seven homers and scored 17 runs on 28 hits. In the three losses they have hit two homers and scored five runs on 16 hits.

After Miley retired Oakland on 30 pitches the first two innings, the A's took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. They got singles from Marcus Semien and Jake Smolinski, followed by Danny Valencia's RBI double to make it 1-0. A sac fly by Khris Davis made it 2-0.

The Orioles pulled within one on Adam Jones' solo homer on a liner to left in the fourth. Jones hit a 1-2 fastball at 91 mph from Zach Neal for his 22nd home run. It was Jones' fifth homer in his last 14 games and made it a 2-1 game.

Miley gave the O's a strong outing. He allowed six hits and two runs over six innings plus one batter. He walked three and fanned two, throwing 99 pitches. He falls to 7-10 with an ERA of 4.98. Neal got the win, allowing two hits and one run over 5 1/3 innings on 72 pitches.

Orioles starting pitchers now have a season-high five consecutive quality starts. In that stretch they have an ERA of 3.30.

In the third game of this series Wednesday night, Yovani Gallardo (4-3, 5.47 ERA) pitches against lefty Ross Detwiler (0-0, 5.79 ERA).
