Notes on rain delay, Cabrera and individual game tickets (delay update)

DUNEDIN, Fla. - The tarp is on the field at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium and we're in a rain delay.

The game may not start at all.

Update: The Blue Jays are estimating first pitch at 2:45 p.m. Jose Bautista has been scratched from the lineup due to the field conditions.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter received a call in his office from Blue Jays manager John Gibbons and a visit from the crew chief. The teams will attempt to wait it out.

Everth Cabrera, batting second today, was thrown out trying to steal in the exhibition opener in Lakeland. Yesterday, he was picked off first base and overran second base on Steve Clevenger's single.

cabrera-defense-sidebar.jpgHis speed and basestealing skills drew the Orioles' interest before they signed him to a one-year, $2.4 million deal.

"It's a whole new situation for him," Showalter said, adding that he's not going to make any judgements this early in the exhibition schedule.

Showalter doesn't want to mute Cabrera's aggressiveness. He said the same thing about Alejandro De Aza last year after the Orioles acquired him from the White Sox on Aug. 30 and he committed a few mistakes on the basepaths.

"I know he's had a couple things there and we'll correct it," Showalter said. "They were both execution, not aggressiveness. He didn't look in on a stolen base. I put that on Rickey Henderson. You can look in and find the ball and still steal the base."

Cabrera went on the disabled list twice last season with hamstring injuries, but he's been healthy with the Orioles.

"Sometimes people tell you, 'He's really been working hard,' and you go, 'OK, right, we'll see,' but you can tell," Showalter said. "I tell you, there's nobody spending more time in our locker room than Everth. There were a couple times I went around - we had a sinkhole on one of the fields that De Aza had told me about - and he was back on Field 3 by himself running.

"You can tell he realizes how important his legs are to him. He's in the weight room all the time. He gets taken out of a game, he stays there. He understands what's going on here. It's because he's got a contract and he also has an option. And that's one of the things attractive about him is the flexibility he gives us."

Clevenger signed his 2015 contract with the Orioles. He'll make $514,000 if he's on the major league roster.
