Notes on the offense and quotes from Matt Wieters and Darren O'Day

The Orioles still have six games to play in the 2015 season. Hopefully the weather cooperates as the Orioles and Blue Jays have a doubleheader scheduled today beginning at 4:05 p.m after last night's rainout.

The Orioles will look for some offense this afternoon. They have just 16 hits in the last four games. Starting with Friday's game at Boston, they have (in order) games with two, five, five and four hits.

When the Orioles lost 4-3 to Toronto on Monday night, they had just one hit after the second inning and 23 of the last 24 O's batters made outs. So they'll have two games to try and get something going this afternoon.

Ryan Flaherty tied his season high when he drove in three runs Monday. He did it on one swing, hitting his ninth home run in the second inning. Flaherty also drove in three runs on June 21 at Toronto and June 16 versus Philadelphia. Flaherty has hit homers while playing five different positions this year with longballs while at first base, second base, shortstop, third base and right field.

Jonathan Schoop is 4-for-30 (.133) over his last eight games after batting .327 (16-for-49) with three homers and five RBIs during a 12-game hitting streak.

J.J. Hardy is batting just .139 (15-for-111) over his past 32 games and has six RBIs over his last 39 games.

The Orioles have scored three runs or less in 21 of the last 37 games and in 39 of their past 74 games since July 6. They are 12-59 on the season when scoring three or fewer runs.

Miguel Gonzalez (9-11, 4.85 ERA) pitches Game 1 for the Orioles against right-hander Marcus Stroman (3-0, 1.89 ERA). In the second game, Kevin Gausman (3-7, 4.49 ERA) faces right-hander R.A. Dickey (11-11, 4.00 ERA).

It should not come as a surprise but the Orioles' pending free agents are not saying too much at this point about their futures with the team. Will they stay or go after this year ends?

I asked catcher Matt Wieters before the game Monday if he has started to think that these could be his last few games as an Oriole.

"I'm trying to embrace it and enjoy this last bit of the season," Wieters said. "I've been very fortunate being able to be here as long as I have and would love to stay here. But that is all stuff that will be controlled and talked about in the offseason. What I can control now is just enjoying this last week and taking it for what it is. I've had an amazing tenure here and hopefully it continues. But that will be something to discuss in the offseason."

Does Wieters feel his arm strength has come all the way back after Tommy John surgery?

"The arm feels good," he said. "It's been a process of strengthening it all year. I think the big thing is kind of been going nonstop since late November, early December last year. So definitely looking forward to a normal offseason. Getting back into my normal weightlifting and throwing program. Not having to worry about so much rehab, rehab, rehab. Arm feels good. The wrist is something that went on me lately and kind of affected my right-handed swing. But I know that will get better with rest."

Reliever Darren O'Day is another pending free agent. Before yesterday's game was rained out, he said he could not say exactly why this O's season came up short. And as for his future, he's not quite ready to discuss much about that just yet.

"I don't know. I don't think you can put your finger on one thing (about this season)," he said. "I think it's human nature to plan ahead, but I'd like to be on a winning team. To have a winning record would be great, so I don't think we're going to mail any games in. Or worry about next year until this year is over."
