The Orioles pieced together two productive at-bats after Nick Markakis and Miguel Tejada walked to open the sixth inning, and they've taken a 3-1 lead over the A's.
Ty Wigginton was swinging away - wise choice, I thought - and produced a sacrifice fly to right field after the runners had moved up on Tyson Ross' wild pitch. Adam Jones followed with another fly ball to right to score Tejada, who alertly took third on Wigginton's sac fly.
Good at-bats, good baserunning. Now we're talking.
Imagine if they mixed in a hit.
Jeremy Guthrie has thrown 113 pitches in six innings. Mark Hendrickson is warming in the bullpen and ready to enter the game. Jason Berken was up earlier.
Manager Dave Trembley doesn't have a designated closer. The same probably holds true for the guys who work the seventh and eighth inning. Just wait for the bullpen phone to ring and grab your glove
Who's closing if this two-run lead reaches the ninth?
Stay tuned.
Update: Garrett Atkins broke an 0-for-18 streak with a single in the seventh inning. Lou Montanez pinch-ran for him. Leave on a high note.
Tonight's attendance: 14,686.
Update II: Dallas Braden came out of the game because it was the manager's decision. No injury. That's what we've been told.
Tejada is receiving lots of ribbing in the dugout for his lunging catch of Kevin Kouzmanoff's liner. He didn't need to leave his feet, and he knows it. He was demonstrating his move on the bench while players and coaches laughed.
It sure looks like Will Ohman is closing this game. And Markakis just homered to give him a three-run lead.
