The Orioles today announced the coaching staffs for their seven minor league affiliates for the 2011 season.
Gary Allenson returns for his sixth season in the organization. He will manage Triple-A Norfolk for the fifth season after guiding the Tides to a 24-31 record in the first two months of the 2010 season. Allenson was promoted to Baltimore to serve as third base coach for the remainder of the season on June 4, 2010. Mike Griffin, who pitched for the 1987 Orioles, will serve as pitching coach for the fourth consecutive season in the organization and second straight season in Norfolk. Griffin was named the winner of the Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award for the second consecutive season in 2010. After four seasons managing at Double-A Bowie, Brad Komminsk will serve as hitting coach for the Tides in 2011.
Gary Kendall will make the jump to Bowie to manage the Baysox after three years of managing at Short Season Single-A Aberdeen. 2011 will be Kendall's 12th season in the organization and eighth season as a manager. Joining Kendall in Bowie will be field coach Denny Hocking, who moves to Bowie after one year with Single-A Frederick. 2011 will be Hocking's second year in the organization. Hocking will share field coaching duties with Einar Diaz, who is in his fourth year with the Orioles and spent the last two years as manager at Rookie Level Bluefield. Kennie Steenstra enters his second year as Bowie's pitching coach and his seventh season as a pitching coach in the organization.
Orlando Gomez will return to manage Frederick for the second consecutive year. 2011 will be Gomez's seventh season in the organization and fifth as a manager. Blaine Beatty returns for his fifth season as pitching coach for the Keys. Former Orioles outfielder Mike Devereaux enters his second year in the organization and his first as a field coach for the Keys.
Single-A Delmarva will again be managed by Ryan Minor, who enters his second year as manager of the Shorebirds after two seasons as their hitting coach. Troy Mattes begins his second year as pitching coach at Delmarva and his fifth year in the organization. Former major leaguer Jose Hernandez will serve as field coach for the Shorebirds after serving as field coach for the Gulf Coast Orioles in 2010.
Scott McGregor will return to Aberdeen as pitching coach for a fourth straight season, his 10th overall. Cesar Devarez enters his seventh season as field coach with Aberdeen and will be joined on the bench in 2011 by Moe Hill, who is in his ninth year in the Orioles organization and spent the last five years as field coach at Bowie. The manager of the IronBirds will be announced at a later date.
Ramon Sambo returns for his fifth season as a manager in the organization and his fourth season managing the Gulf Coast League Orioles (also 2007, 2009-2010). Larry Jaster, who is in his 15th year in the organization, takes over as pitching coach after serving the last three years as the pitching coordinator for Florida operations. Milt May returns for his second season as a field coach for the Gulf Coast League club and will be joined by Leo Gomez, who enters his third year in the organization and second season (also 2009) as a field coach for Gulf Coast.
