O's fall 2-0 at New York as Nova pitches shutout

Scott Feldman pitched a very strong game, but Ivan Nova was just a little bit better. Nova threw a complete-game three-hitter as the Yankees beat the Orioles 2-0 this afternoon at Yankee Stadium. The O's fall to 1-4 on this important road trip. Nova, now 8-4 with a 2.88 ERA, threw 104 pitches in pitching his second complete game of the year against the Orioles. He beat them 3-2 on a three-hitter July 5 at New York. With their win this afternoon, the Yankees moved into third place, a half-game ahead of the Orioles in the AL East. The Orioles fall to 7-7 against the Yankees, 26-29 against the AL East and 6-11 in their last 17 games. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first. Brett Gardner led off with a double and scored on a Robinson Cano two-out double. Cano drove in his 88th run of the season. Cano made it 2-0 with a solo homer off Troy Patton leading off the eighth. It was Cano's 27th homer off the Orioles, his most against any team. Feldman took the loss despite giving up just six hits and one run over seven innings. He threw 111 pitches and falls to 4-4 with an ERA of 4.18 in 10 Orioles starts. He has pitched to an ERA of 1.88 over his last four starts. Last season, the Orioles won all six series they played at New York and Boston. With this loss, they have won just one of five this season. They went 13-5 at New York and Boston last season and are 5-9 in those cities in 2013. After going 18-9 last August, the O's finished the month at 12-14 this year. Wei-Yin Chen (7-7, 3.76 ERA) faces Andy Pettitte (10-9, 4.05 ERA) in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
