O's game blog: Looking for a doubleheader split

The Orioles will try to break a 13-game losing streak to the New York Yankees in the night portion of today's day-night doubleheader. The Yankees beat the Orioles 8-5 earlier today and are 14-2 against the Orioles for the season.

Gabriel Ynoa took the loss in Game 1, allowing seven hits and seven runs over six innings and 95 pitches. He falls to 1-7 with an ERA of 5.93 and the Orioles are 1-8 in his starts.

New York hit four more homers off Baltimore pitching in the opener, including two in the first inning, a three-run shot by Didi Gregorius and a solo blast by Gleyber Torres. Torres is batting .389 with 11 homers and 14 RBIs versus the O's in 2019.

O's pitchers have allowed 245 homers for the season, and that is a club record, breaking their mark of 242 from two years ago.

Trey Mancini (No. 28) and Anthony Santander (No. 10) hit solo homers in Game 1. Mancini has 11 homers and 28 RBIs over his past 24 games. Santander went 3-for-4 and is now batting .310. Over his last 24 games he is batting .366 with nine doubles, a triple, six homers and 18 RBIs.

The Orioles (39-79) have lost six of seven games, all versus New York and Houston. They are 3-8 in the last 11 games, 8-11 over 19 and 17-21 in the last 38. They are 21-36 on the road.

Ynoa went six innings in the opener and that is 32nd time this season the O's starter has thrown six or more innings. But they have just two quality starts over the last 15 games with a rotation ERA of 7.94 in that span.

New York (78-41) has tied a season-high by going 37 games over the .500 mark. The Yankees have won 11 of 13 games and are 37-14 since June 15. They are 44-18 at home and 45-16 in games within the American League East.

James Paxton got the win in the opener, allowing three runs over six innings. Both homers he gave up came on 0-2 counts. Before today, he had allowed just two 0-2 home runs in his career.

Lefty Ty Blach (0-0, 14.21 ERA) will make his O's debut tonight. He was claimed off waivers from San Francisco on Aug. 3. He pitched in relief twice this year for the Giants, allowing a combined 10 runs in 6 1/3 innings, facing the Dodgers on April 30 and the Mets on July 20.

Blach has pitched for the Giants since 2016, going 15-19 with an ERA of 4.56 and a 1.397 WHIP in 87 games and 39 starts. He has averaged 2.7 walks and 4.7 strikeouts per nine innings in his career.

He throws his four-seam fastball 60 percent of the time with an average velocity of 90.6 mph. He throws his changeup 23 percent, curveball 9 percent and slider 8 percent of the time.

Tonight, he will become the 52nd player used by the Orioles this year. He has never pitched against the Yankees.
