O's game blog: Looking to end a losing streak against Yankees

The Orioles (39-80) play game No. 120 tonight as they try to snap a 14-game losing streak to the New York Yankees. New York swept Monday's day-night doubleheader by 8-5 and 11-8 scores, scoring 19 runs and hitting seven home runs.

In going 15-2 this season against the Orioles, New York has scored 137 runs (8.1 per game) and hit 59 homers (3.5 per game). New York has scored eight or more runs eight times in 2019 against the Orioles. In their last five games, the Yankees have scored 51 runs.

Lefty John Means (8-7, 3.36 ERA) will make his 19th start tonight. The Orioles are 7-11 in his starts. Means went 7-4 with a 2.50 ERA in the first half and was an American League All-Star. In four second-half starts, he is 1-3 with a 7.11 ERA. Means allowed 0.98 homers per nine innings in the first half and that number is 2.84 in the second.

Right-hander Domingo Germán (15-2, 4.05 ERA) gets the start for New York. The Yankees are 16-3 in his starts. But over his past four starts, while he is 3-0, his ERA is 6.86 and opponent batters have an OPS of .944 in that span. He's allowed eight homers in 21 innings in that stretch.

The Orioles' Trey Mancini homered in both games of Monday's doubleheader. He is hitting .279/.343/.542 this season and has hit safely in 85-of-112 games with an at-bat. Among outfielders, his 124 hits rank sixth in the AL and 10th in the majors. In his past 25 games, Mancini has hit 12 homers with 30 RBIs and a 1.018 OPS.

Anthony Santander is batting .352 (37-for-105) over his last 25 games with nine doubles, a triple, six homers, 18 RBIs and an OPS of 1.004.

Minor league notes: Triple-A Norfolk enters play tonight with a 7-2 record in August, the best record in the International League. On the offensive side, the Tides lead the league in average (.287) and OBP (.375) this month, although Norfolk ranks last in the league with five home runs. On the pitching side, the Tides lead the International League in ERA (2.42) and average against (.211) this month.

Outfielder Mason Williams has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games and 35 of his last 39, batting .372 with seven home runs, 23 RBIs and a .419 OBP in that span since June 26. That .372 average since June 26 leads the International League.

Outfielder Austin Hays has homered in two of his last three games and he's tied for the International League lead with 12 doubles since the All-Star break. Hays also ranks among league leaders since the break in extra-base hits (tied for first, 19), runs scored (tied for second, 26) and total bases (10th, 63). In 39 games with the Tides in 2019, 56.4 percent of his hits have gone for extra-bases (22 of 39).

Short-season Single-A Aberdeen got a three-pitcher no-hitter last night at Vermont for the first no-hitter in team history. Jake Lyons went the first five innings, James Ryan went three and Kyle Martin struck out the side in the ninth.

Three Aberdeen pitchers are in the top 10 in ERA in the New York-Penn League. Leonardo Rodriguez is third at 2.17, with Ryan Conroy fourth at 2.33 and Kevin Magee eighth at 2.66.
