O's game blog: Orioles try to even series in the Bronx

The Orioles play in New York this afternoon, looking to even this three-game series with the Yankees at a win each. New York outscored the Orioles 10-8 last night at Yankee Stadium.

The Orioles (44-109) have lost five of seven, 11 of 14 and 23 of their last 30 games. They are 17-59 on the road and have lost 13 of their last 14 away from Oriole Park.

After going 0-for-13 in his first five games, the Orioles' DJ Stewart is 4-for-7 in his last three games with a double, two homers, three runs and three RBIs. Stewart is batting .200 (4-for-20). With his first appearance on Wednesday night, Stewart became the 14th Oriole to make his major league debut this season. The 14 debuts matched the most in a season in Orioles history. According to STATS, LLC., the mark for most Orioles to debut in a season was set in 1955 (the club's second year in Baltimore) with 14.

Mullins-Catch-Black-Sidebar.jpgSince making his big league debut on Aug. 10, center fielder Cedric Mullins is batting .275 (36-for-131) and 13 of his 36 hits are extra-base hits. Mullins' .average ranks eighth among American League rookies and 12th in the majors among rookies. His nine doubles since Aug. 10 are tied for fifth in the majors among rookies. Over his past eight games, Mullins is batting .387 (12-for-31) with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs.

The Yankees (94-59) last won 95 games in the 2012 season. They can match that win total today. New York has now hit 249 homers for the year, the most in the majors since the Orioles hit 253 two years ago. New York has hit 47 homers in its last 27 games and 35 in its last 17 home games.

At 94-59 (.614), New York has the majors' third-best record and third-most wins behind Boston (105-49, .682) and Houston (96-57, .627). The Yankees are 35 games over .500 and one game under their season-high watermark of 36 over .500.

On the mound today, right-hander David Hess (3-10, 5.22 ERA) will make his 18th start. O Aug. 22 and 27, Hess made starts and allowed just one run over 13 innings. But in three starts since then, he has thrown 13 1/3 innings, allowing 22 hits and 15 runs (nine earned) with a .355 batting average against. Hess is 1-7 with a 5.34 ERA in 12 games on the road.

Right-hander Lance Lynn (9-10, 4.90 ERA) gets the start for New York, which acquired him July 30 from Minnesota. In his nine games (eight starts) with the Yankees, Lynn is 2-2 with a 4.47 ERA, 1.295 WHIP, 2.1 walks per nine innings and 10.3 strikeouts/nine.

Lynn made his Yankees debut in relief against the Orioles on Aug. 1. He threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings on five hits and 71 pitches. He has two quality starts as a Yankee and New York is 5-3 in his eight starts.

The Orioles have clinched the No. 1 pick in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft. The only previous time the Orioles had the No. 1 selection, they took LSU right-hander Ben McDonald in 1989.
