The Orioles picked up another win at Fenway Park on Saturday. Today they look to gain a 2-1 edge in this four-game series that ends Monday.
The Orioles are 6-1 in their last seven games at Fenway dating to last year and have outscored Boston 38-21 in those games. The Orioles are 23-11 at Boston since July 19, 2011.
Maybe they just love the green.
They continue to show they are resilient. Blow a game against New York by allowing a pinch-hit grand slam and come back to win the next two in the series. Lose in frustrating walk-off fashion Friday night and bounce back to win yesterday. We saw the Orioles do this a lot last year and it has carried over.
At 6-5, they are just one game back of Boston for the American League East lead and could tie the Red Sox for first place with a win today.
Miguel Gonzalez (1-1, 1.42 ERA) pitches for the O's against right-hander Rick Porcello (1-1, 3.86 ERA).
Gonzalez started 2015 as he ended 2014 - by pitching very well. Over his last 15 starts since July 1, he is 7-5 with an ERA of 2.01.
Gonzalez's ERA by month:
July - 1.82
August - 2.96
September - 1.69
April - 1.42
In 42 career games (39 starts) within the AL East, he is 17-10 with a 3.22 ERA and 24 quality starts. He went 5-2 with a 2.78 ERA vs. the AL East last season.
The 26-year-old Porcello signed a contract extension with Boston on the eve of this year's season opener. It was a four-year deal worth $82.5 million that runs through 2019.
Porcello has not allowed a run over the first four innings of his two starts. Left-handed batters are hitting just .148 against him, while right-handed batters are hitting .222.
O's pitching has held Boston to four runs and 11 hits in this series. The Red Sox entered this series second in the AL in runs scored, averaging 6.2 per game. Boston is 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
The Orioles have homered in eight straight games, hitting 13 over that stretch.
Catcher Caleb Joseph is 9-for-17 over his last five games with a triple, homer and four RBIs. Joseph is 4-for-6 this year when batting with runners in scoring position.
