O's game blog: Tillman looks for 14th win (O's add Brandon Bonilla)

The Orioles will try to end their road trip on a winning note today. That would allow them to end a four-game losing streak and avoid being swept four in a row at New York for the first time since Sept. 19-22, 2005.

The Orioles have gone 3-10 at Yankee Stadium since the start of the 2015 season and are 12-20 there since 2013. The Orioles are 20-26 in road games this season.

The Orioles have been outscored 19-4 during their losing streak and 14-2 in the first three games of the series in the Bronx. They have hit just .152 (14-for-92) in the three games against the Yankees.

O's hitters in this series:
* Pedro Alvarez is 1-for-11
* Adam Jones is 3-for-12
* J.J. Hardy is 2-for-10
* Manny Machado is 1-for-7
* Jonathan Schoop is 1-for-12
* Mark Trumbo is 2-for-10
* Matt Wieters is 0-for-3
* Caleb Joseph is 0-for-6.

While the Orioles bullpen has allowed six hits and five runs in six innings in the series, New York's bullpen has pitched 9 2/3 innings allowing one hit and no runs with two walks and 10 strikeouts. The Yankees bullpen has pitched 28 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

Chris Tillman (13-2, 3.29 ERA) makes his 21st start of the year today and faces left-hander CC Sabathia (5-7, 3.94 ERA). Sabathia will make his 17th start of the year and the 36th of his career versus the Orioles.

Tillman has allowed one run in each of his last three starts. In that span he has thrown 21 innings, allowing 12 hits and three runs with a .169 batting average against. The Orioles are 17-3 in Tillman's starts this year and 9-1 over the last 10. Tillman has nine starts against American League East teams this season and the Orioles are 9-0 in those games. Tillman has an ERA of 7.30 in eight career starts at Yankee Stadium.

Sabathia is not pitching as well as he was earlier this year. Over his last five outings he has given up five runs or more each time, going 0-3 with an ERA of 7.94, raising his season ERA from 2.20 to 3.04. In 28 1/3 innings he has allowed 39 hits, including five homers.

Sabathia has pitched twice this year versus the Orioles, throwing 12 scoreless innings on eight hits. In his career against Baltimore he is 19-7 with a 3.28 ERA.

The Orioles are 4-5 against the Yankees in the season series and they have hit just .204/.279/.313 with 22 runs scored and an OPS of .593.

O's get Bonilla: The Orioles have added another draft pick as they have agreed to sign 13th-round pick, left-handed pitcher Brandon Bonilla out of Hawaii Pacific University. The 22-year-old Bonilla is the son of former Oriole Bobby Bonilla and the godson of Barry Bonds.

Bonilla agreed to a deal for $100,000 which was the maximum he could get. Players taken after the 10th round can sign for more than that but the money must come out of a team's draft pool. The O's pool was exhausted by the signings of their top 10 round picks. Bonilla was able to sign after the July 15 deadline to sign picks as a fifth-year senior.

Bonilla was the closer this year and earned a spot on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's 2016 All-West Region First Team just days after being named to the All-PacWest First Team. He went 2-0 with an 0.38 ERA and a program-record 12 saves, was tied for fourth nationally in the saves category and led the conference. He struck out 38 over 25 1/3 innings.

Bonilla is in Sarasota right now and once he is medically cleared to pitch he is expected to join the Orioles Gulf Coast League team. He possibly could move later to short season Single-A Aberdeen. The O's drafted Bonilla in round 25 in 2014 but did not sign him.

This deal means the Orioles reached agreements with 34 of their 41 draft picks.

The Bonilla agreement was first reported by Jon Heyman of Today's Knuckleball and FanRag Sports.
