O's game suspended, to be resumed in bottom of sixth on Wednesday

ST. LOUIS – A storm producing heavy rain that rolled through Busch Stadium tonight just after 8 p.m local time has forced the suspension of tonight’s Orioles-Cardinals game.

The game will resume Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. local time (12:15 p.m ET) with the teams tied 1-1 and St. Louis coming to bat in the last of the sixth. When that game ends, and 30 minutes later, they will play Wednesday's regularly scheduled nine-inning game.

Tonight, right-hander Kyle Bradish made his fourth start since coming off the injured list. Just like Dean Kremer last night, he had to pitch early on with no run support.

But he got the job done allowing one run over the first four innings on 61 pitches and twice stranding runners at second and third. He did that in the third and fourth innings by getting big outs.

The Orioles didn’t score until the sixth inning last night and not until the fifth tonight.

Through the first four innings of this game, the O’s went 1-for-13 against Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn, who entered at 1-2 with a 4.17 ERA. He had an ERA of 7.36 in three May starts.

But down 1-0, they tied it up on Jorge Mateo’s RBI double to left in the fifth. With two outs and none on, Kyle Stowers, who had doubled for their only previous hit in the third, reached on a two-base error charged to second baseman Nolan Gorman. That made the run unearned when Mateo drilled a 3-2 cutter for a game-tying double. It was a ball hit 107.7 mph off the bat into left field.

The Cards had taken a 1-0 lead in the home second. Left fielder Alec Burleson singled with one out and advanced to second on a grounder. He scored on Gorman’s double to center field.

Cedric Mullins chased the ball deep into center field but could not pull it in as he made contact with the wall.

Bradish allowed four hits and the one run over the five innings with one walk and six strikeouts, throwing 74 pitches, 52 for strikes. His ERA is now 2.41.

In the last of the first tonight, Cards right fielder Lars Nootbaar was ejected by plate umpire Mike Estabrook for apparently something he said from the dugout after earlier being rung up on strikes. Dylan Carlson replaced him.

The O's had only two hits tonight, the two doubles. To this point they are 5-for-52 in this series scoring four runs over 15 innings.

The Orioles will take a 29-16 record into tomorrow's play, with the Cardinals at 21-26 after winning the series opener on Monday night.

Tonight's game was halted at 8:09 p.m. local time and the announcement of the suspension of play came about 90 minutes later.

There is no word as of after play tonight who will be on the mound for either team when this game is resumed. But the starters for the scheduled game are still expected to be lefty John Means (2-0, 3.06 ERA) and former O's right-hander Kyle Gibson (3-2, 4.09 ERA).

As this game was suspended, the teams do not get an extra player for play on Wednesday.

With the O's suspended and the Yankees losing tonight to Seattle, New York's AL East lead over Baltimore is now 1.5 games to end the night. The Yankees have lost back-to-back games for the first time since they dropped two in a row at Camden Yards April 29-30.

Basallo note: The Orioles say one of their top prospects, Double-A Bowie's Samuel Basallo, was removed from the Baysox's game tonight as a precaution after being hit in the right thumb while blocking a ball. Basallo, who homered in the game, is ranked as the sport's No. 10 prospect by Baseball America and No. 14 by MLB Pipeline.
