O's lose nightcap, 17-3, MacPhail talks about trade, Lee trade official

The Yankees completed their doubleheader sweep with a 17-3 victory in Game 2. They only outscored the Orioles 5-3 after the first inning, so the game was closer than...never mind. President of baseball operations Andy MacPhail talked about the appeal of trading for first baseman Chris Davis and pitcher Tommy Hunter, who will join the Orioles tomorrow in New York.

"We got two 25-year-old players who have already had some success at the major league level and are going to be with us for several seasons apiece," MacPhail said in a phone interview. "One is already in the rotation and has been a 13-game winner and pitched in the World Series. The other is, when given over 600 at-bats, a 30-home run guy. "There was something very appealing to us, young players that you can have under control who already had some level of success in the major leagues and have versatility. Davis can play first, third and left field. Tommy has started and relieved, though he's principally been a starting pitcher, which is something that greatly appeals to us." Davis will get regular at-bats at first base, which becomes much easier once Derrek Lee is traded to the Pirates. It wasn't an easy decision to part with Koji Uehara, the team's best reliever. "Koji has just been great for us," MacPhail said. "I can't imagine a more successful first foray into the Far East. I think he really enjoyed his time here, and he was a terrific performer for us. It was hard to let go of him, but at the same time, we need to add young building blocks when we get the opportunity." Update: The Orioles haven't made an announcement on Derrek Lee, and it might not come until tomorrow, but they're expected to receive Single-A first baseman Aaron Baker from the Pirates. I know nothing about Baker, 23, beyond his stats. He's hitting .282 with 21 doubles, 15 homers, 73 RBIs and an .820 OPS in 103 games with Bradenton of the Florida State League. He was an 11th-round pick in 2009 out of Oklahoma. Baker, listed at 6 foot 2 and 220 pounds, is a left-handed batter who's hitting .305 against right-handers and .224 against left-handers. The system is suddenly deep in first basemen. I have no idea where Baker will be assigned. Update II: It's official. And Baker will be assigned to Single-A Frederick, which also has first baseman Tyler Townsend when he's healthy.
