O's minor leaguer hospitalized after being hit by a pitch last night (Davies exits Bowie start)

Orioles minor league infielder Anthony Caronia is in a Baltimore hospital after getting hit in the face by a pitch last night while playing for the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds at home against Greensboro. During his first at-bat, in the last of the third inning, Caronia took a fastball from Greensboro starter right-hander Domingo German up and in and the lefty hitter could not avoid getting hit. He walked off the field with a trainer, but was later transported from Salisbury to Baltimore. "He had to go by ambulance last night to Baltimore. Doctors in Baltimore are checking him out," Orioles director of player development Brian Graham said. "He's hurt, it hit him good. He's swollen up and he's hurt. We're just waiting for the official evaluation." Caronia's jaw and cheekbone both were involved and right now it's way too soon to know how long the 22-year-old Caronia will be out. Drafted in the 27th round in 2012 by the Orioles, Caronia was starting at second base for the Shorebirds. He was batting .316 (6-for-19) through seven games with two doubles and one RBI. In 2013, between Delmarva and Single-A Frederick, Caronia hit .271 with no homers and 13 RBIs over 58 games. Caronia has been put on the minor league disabled list and pitcher Bennett Parry has been activated by the Shorebirds. In another note from the minors, Triple-A Norfolk outfielder Henry Urrutia became a father yesterday and he'll be away from the team for a few days. Through seven games for the Tides, Urrutia is batting .259 with three doubles, no homers and four RBIs. Davies leaves Bowie start: Right-hander Zach Davies got the start this afternoon for the Double-A Bowie Baysox at Akron. But according to the club's Twitter feed, he left the game in the last of the second when he was struck by a line drive on his pitching elbow. Matt Bischoff came on to pitch. Over 1 1/3 innings, Davies gave up two hits and one run with two walks and one strikeout. He threw 26 pitches. In his first career Double-A start Sunday, Davies gave up five hits and two runs over five innings against Harrisburg.
