O's yield four homers in an inning for first time ever as Tigers roll 10-3

Miguel Cabrera homered again and this time it was a grand slam. Prince Fielder homered. The Tigers scored eight runs in an inning and Jason Hammel was ejected. It could have been a better Saturday for the Orioles, who gave up four homers in one inning for the first time in team history as Detroit pounded the Birds 10-3 behind Justin Verlander. After giving up three consecutive homers to Victor Martinez, Jhonny Peralta and Alex Avila during the Tigers' eight-run fourth, Hammel was ejected when the next pitch hit Matt Tuiasosopo. Hammel argued - probably that he would not have hit a batter with an 82 mph slider - but he was gone from the game and falls to 7-3 with an ERA of 5.43. J.J Hardy hit a pair of solo homers off Verlander for his 10th career multi-homer game. Chris Davis added an RBI single for the Orioles, his 51st RBI. Verlander gave up eight hits and three runs, throwing 112 pitches over seven innings. He improved to 7-4 with an ERA of 3.70 on the year. He is now 8-0 with an ERA of 2.93 in 12 career starts against the Orioles. It was an eventful day at Camden Yards: * The Orioles had never given up four homers in an inning in team history until today. They had hit four homers in an inning twice - in the second inning on Sept. 5, 1995 against California and in the seventh inning on May 17, 1967 at Boston. * The most homers ever hit by both teams in a game at Camden Yards was 11 on July 1, 1994, when the Orioles hit six and California hit five. Today the Tigers hit five and the Orioles hit two. * The eight-run inning was the biggest of the year by an O's opponent, topping the six that Tampa Bay scored in the top of the ninth here on May 18. * This was the first time the Orioles had given up three straight homers since Aug. 11, 2011 against New York and the first time the Tigers had hit three straight since June 24, 2001 vs. Minnesota. * Cabrera has now homered in both games of this series and today hit his fourth career grand slam. * The Tigers had scored just three runs in the last three games of their series with Pittsburgh. With five last night, that makes eight runs in their last four games. Today they scored eight runs in one inning. This is the eighth time in the last 10 games an O's starter failed to produce a quality start as Hammel gave up five runs and five hits in three-plus innings. In that time, the starters have pitched just 54 1/3 innings to an ERA of 5.80. The Orioles, who had won eight of 11 games, are now 31-25. In the series finale on Sunday afternoon, Kevin Gausman (0-2, 11.00 ERA) pitches for the Orioles against Rick Porcello (2-2, 5.29 ERA).
