Oakland pours it on in the third in 10-0 romp (postgame quotes)

For the second night in a row, the Oakland Athletics scored in the third inning and went on to win at Camden Yards. But tonight it seemed like they would never stop scoring in that inning.

Oakland had 10 hits and scored 10 runs in the top of the third to blast the Orioles 10-0 at Camden Yards. The Orioles (41-104) are now three losses from tying the club record for losses in one season, set in 1988.

In the third inning, Oakland scored eight runs off starter Andrew Cashner and two off reliever Cody Carroll. The first 11 batters reached safely, and the A's went 10-for-13. Three players had two hits each in the inning. Cashner threw 25 pitches and Carroll 32. Nine runs were scored before the Orioles recorded an out.

Cashner allowed an infield single to start the game and then retired six straight batters. But then came the third inning. It started with two singles and walk and included Matt Chapman's two-run double and Matt Olson's three-run homer, his 26th.

Cashner-White-v-Yankees-sidebar.jpgCashner went two innings plus eight batters, allowing eight hits and eight runs. He is 4-15 with a 5.29 ERA. Over his past five games, Cashner is 0-5 with an 8.28 ERA. In that span he's allowed eight homers and 23 earned runs in 25 innings. The Orioles are 8-20 in his 2018 starts.

So, on offense the Orioles had just one hit. That doesn't sound like nearly enough, and it wasn't as they were shut out for the 13th time. They've scored 14 runs over the last six games and 27 in their last 11.

DJ Stewart went 0-for-3 in his major league debut and was robbed of a hit in the last of the fifth. First baseman Olson made a nice lunging stop near the line to deny Stewart his first big league base hit.

The Orioles have lost six in a row and have their eighth losing streak of at least six games this season. They've lost 10 of 11 and 18 of 22. They are 0-5 versus the A's, who improved to 89-57 and have won six in a row and eight of nine games.

Postgame quotes

Cashner on what happened in the third: "Yeah, just didn't locate. Threw a lot of off-speed middle of the plate. That one fastball was kind of out over. Just have to find a way to get through it and I didn't find a way."

Cashner, any common denominator to recent struggles?: "Yeah, I'm not locating my fastball, I think, overall to all the quadrants. I feel like that is what makes me a good pitcher. Not spinning the ball well right now and you know, most of my changeups are down below the zone. So, need to get more off-speed in the zone and command my fastball better."

Cashner's response when told that Buck Showalter indicated there could be a physical issue he's dealing with?: "I don't know, we'll wait and see."

Trey Mancini on the team's effort in recent games: "I wouldn't say I'm frustrated with the effort, but the execution is clearly not there. We've only won, since the start of our road trip, one game in Seattle. That is just not going to cut it. Even if you are going through a rebuild, you don't want to go out and lose every day like we have been. So, we definitely need to step up our execution."

Mancini on the losing snowballing with guys new to team, and some new to the majors: "You just kind of try to take a step back and use the rest of this season as a time to just lay it all on the line out there. You can do that. We're not going to make the playoffs, obviously. So, you just want to go out there and play your heart out every night. Show everybody, show Baltimore, show the organization what you can do. And, hopefully, we can do that the rest of the year."
