Inside the Phillies:
The Phillies split their four-game series with the Mets after allowing a walk-off homer to the Mets' Brandon Nimmo last night in the finale. They're now tied for first place in the National League East with the Braves. As of late, Gabe Kapler's ballclub has been rolling. They'll travel to Camden Yards for a quick make-up game against the O's to replay their game from May 15 that was postponed due to rain. The Phillies have long been rumored to be enamored with several Orioles on the trade block, specifically shortstop Manny Machado and lefty reliever Zach Britton. The asking price for Machado however has been reported to be too much for Kapler's club, but the O's closer still might be a possibility for the Phillies.
There was some speculation that center fielder Odúbel Herrera could be in consideration for the All-Star game after his hot start to 2018, but a poor performance in June (.236) doomed his chances. He's still got 16 homers and 52 RBIs. Left fielder Rhys Hoskins had a disappointing May, hitting just .161, but was selected to compete in the Home Run Derby at Nationals Park on Monday evening. Good things are coming when shortstop Scott Kingery plays well. The Phillies are 26-5 when Kingery scores a run and 13-3 when he collects at least one RBI in a game. Third baseman Maikel Franco has been rolling to start July and is batting .400 this month.
Right-hander Nick Pivetta (5-7, 4.62 ERA) has struggled in his last two starts, allowing eight earned runs in just over four innings and went 0-4 in June. Pivetta lasted just two innings and gave up three runs last time he took the mound for the Phillies on July 6. However, Pivetta got the victory on May 16 against the Orioles in his only career appearance against the Birds, allowing one run and two hits and striking out 11.
Righty reliever Seranthony DomÃnguez is the latest choice in the Phillies' closer carousel, and he's posted a 1.65 ERA and eight saves.
