Inside the Yankees:

For the first time in more than 20 years, the Yankees are playing baseball in the second half of the season under the .500 mark. Suffice it to say, this year hasn't lived up to expectations in the Bronx.

Offensively, the Yankees have been scuffling all season. The team ranks 19^th in the majors with a .250 team average, compounded by the season-long struggles from two of their biggest power sources, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira. Both are certainly past their prime, but Rodriguez's .214 average and Teixeira's .186 average simply aren't getting the job done. Shortstop Didi Gregorius is a bright spot for the Bronx Bombers, however. He leads the team with a .297 batting average and is second with 41 RBIs. At 39 years old, right fielder Carlos Beltran is keeping the Yankees afloat at the plate, hitting .297 with 19 home runs and 58 RBIs.

As for the pitching staff, the Yankees are led by ace Masahiro Tanaka, who tallied his seventh win of the season Sunday night against the rival Red Sox. Tanaka allowed just one earned run in six innings of work, helping drop his ERA to a respectable 3.15. Starting Sunday's series finale against Boston means he won't face the Orioles in the four-game series, however, likely a welcome notion for Baltimore fans. Right-hander Ivan Nova will start the series opener, looking to win his second straight decision. Nova hasn't lost since June 21, but was mediocre in his last start against the Orioles back on June 4. In that game, Nova allowed five earned runs in six innings, but got the win in an 8-6 Yankees victory. Nathan Eovaldi is halfway toward matching his win total from a year ago, but is just 1-4 in his last five decisions after posting an undefeated month of May. With the Yankees fading fast in the American League East, the team is expected to be considered "sellers" as the trade deadline approaches, and Eovaldi's name has surfaced as a possible trade piece for a team looking to bolster its starting rotation. Wednesday's and Thursday's starters, Michael Pineda and CC Sabathia, respectively, have had lackluster campaigns in 2016. Pineda is just 3-9 on the year while Sabathia is 5-7, though the left-hander boasts a 19-7 career record against the Orioles.

The Yankees' pitching strength clearly lies on the back end, where the team's bullpen is one of the best in baseball. Of course, most fans know the three-headed monster that is Aroldis Chapman, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller. Each sports an ERA under 2.60 while Chapman and Miller have combined for 25 saves. Miller, in particular, has been impressive this season. The former Orioles reliever has allowed only six earned runs in more than 40 innings of work. If the Yankees have any chance at making the postseason, they'll need their bullpen to continue its dominance as the summer heats up.
