Source confirms Orioles acquire Jiménez from White Sox for McGough (more trades, Irvin DFA'd)

With about 15 minutes until the trade deadline, Orioles executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias found his right-handed hitting outfielder to check another box.

The Orioles are trading for White Sox outfielder Eloy Jiménez, with Triple-A reliever Trey McGough leaving the organization in return, according to an industry source.

Jiménez missed a month of the season with a hamstring injury and has appeared in 65 games, batting .240/.297/.345 with nine doubles, five home runs and 16 RBIs. He’s a career .270/.321/.469 hitter in six seasons since his debut in 2019. He finished fourth in American League Rookie of the Year voting after hitting 31 home runs.

The following season brought a Silver Slugger Award during the COVID year.

The Orioles are inheriting the remainder of Jiménez’s $13 million salary. The contract includes club options for 2025 at $16.5 million and 2026 at $18.5 million with a pair of $3 million buyouts.

Jiménez is the bat that replaces Austin Hays, who was dealt to the Phillies for reliever Seranthony Domínguez and defense-first outfielder Christian Pache.

The teams haven’t announced the trade. A spot must open for Jiménez on the active roster.

McGough came to the Orioles in the Triple-A phase of the 2022 Rule 5 draft. He pitched at Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg.

Recovered from Tommy John surgery, McGough had a 1.83 ERA and 0.814 WHIP in 12 games with Double-A Bowie and a 2.08 ERA and 1.096 WHIP in 16 games with Norfolk.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan was first with Jiménez news and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale was first with McGouth’s inclusion in the trade.

MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo reported a minor league deal, with the Orioles sending outfielder Billy Cook to the Pirates for right-hander Patrick Reilly, 22, a fifth-round pick in 2023 out of Vanderbilt who has posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 19 starts with High-A Greensboro.

Updated: The Orioles acquired outfielder/first baseman Austin Slater, infielder Livan Soto and cash considerations from the Reds for cash considerations or a player to be named later, and sent Double-A Bowie pitcher Seth Johnson, the No. 8 prospect in the system, and High-A Aberdeen pitcher Moisés Chace to the Phillies for left-handed reliever Gregory Soto.

Slater has been traded twice in three weeks. He spent parts of eight seasons with the Giants and is a career .252/.342/.388 hitter.

Gregory Soto is the left-handed reliever that the Orioles sought. He's under team control through 2025 and has a 4.08 ERA and 1.585 WHIP in 43 appearances, with 5.1 walks and 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

The Orioles designated left-hander Cole Irvin for assignment and recalled catcher Blake Hunt, who was on the taxi squad. He's wearing No. 81.

Irvin bounced between the rotation and bullpen since the Orioles acquired him from the Athletics in January 2023. He's registered a 4.85 ERA and 1.405 WHIP in 21 games (14 starts).
