The Orioles have acquired Red Sox left-hander Andrew Miller from the Red Sox for Double-A Bowie pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, according to an industry source.
With this move, the Orioles currently have four left-handers in their bullpen.
ESPN.com first reported that the Orioles acquired Miller. A source has confirmed that Rodriguez is involved in the trade.
Rodriguez was 3-7 with a 4.79 ERA, 69 strikeouts, 29 walks in 16 starts with Bowie. He is 22-26 with a 3.45 ERA in his career in the minors.
Miller has posted a 2.34 ERA (42 1/3 innings pitched, 11 earned runs) with 13 walks and 69 strikeouts in 50 appearances for Boston this season. He has held left-handed hitters to a .150/.203/.217 line in 65 plate appearances, while keeping righties to a .180/.279/.258 line in 105 plate appearances.
Miller, a pending free agent, ranks fourth among major league relievers this season, striking out 14.67 per nine innings. His 5.31 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks 17th.
Since becoming a full-time reliever in 2012, Miller has pitched to a 2.78 ERA (113 1/3 innings pitches, 35 earned runs) in 140 games, striking out 13.3 per nine innings.
