LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Orioles just increased their pitching depth by acquiring right-hander Alec Asher from the Phillies for a player to be named later or cash.
Asher goes on the 40-man roster, which is now full.
Asher, 25, has gone 32-33 with a 3.39 ERA in 110 career minor league games (89 starts). He made five starts with the Phillies last season and went 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA - allowing seven earned runs over 27 2/3 innings.
A fourth-round pick of the Rangers in 2012, Asher also was 3-0 with a 1.53 ERA in four starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley last season. He allowed five earned runs in 29 2/3 innings.
The Lakeland, Fla. native went 0-6 with a 9.31 ERA in seven starts with the Phillies in 2015. He was involved in the trade that sumer that brought pitcher Cole Hamels to the Rangers.
On June 16, 2016, Asher was suspended for 80 games for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy after testing positive for the steroid chlorodehydromethyltestosterone.
Asher underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow when he was 14, so he got that surgery out of the way early.
As for today's game, Mychal Givens tossed a scoreless fifth inning and Oliver Drake allowed two hits in two scoreless innings, but Jimmy Yacabonis surrendered a two-run double to Matt Tuiasosopo in the eighth to cut the Orioles' lead to 4-3.
Cedric Mullins delivered an RBI double in the seventh after Chris Dickerson walked and stole second base.
Update: Asher has two minor league options.
"Asher is a solid major league pitcher who our scouts have liked for a few seasons that we believe will help our club this season," executive vice president Dan Duquette wrote in a text message. "Good size, three major league pitches and command of himself and his pitches."
We're tied 4-4 in the ninth after Yacabonis gave up three runs.
Update II: Austin Hays' infield hit with two outs in the ninth scored Adrian Marin and gave the Orioles a 5-4 lead.
