Orioles acquire Wade Miley from Mariners (updated)

The Orioles have reached agreement on a trade with the Mariners less than 24 hours before the non-waiver deadline, acquiring left-hander Wade Miley in exchange for lefty Ariel Miranda. Multiple sources confirmed it before the Orioles made the announcement a few minutes ago.

The rotation finally gets a southpaw.

The Orioles and Mariners have been engaged in heavy discussions involving Miley for the past few days.

Miley-throws-side-bar.jpgMiley, 29, is 7-8 with a 4.98 ERA in 19 starts this season and 56-54 with a 4.07 ERA in six major league seasons, the first four spent with the Diamondbacks. He was a National League All-Star in 2012 and placed second in Rookie of the Year voting after going 16-11 with a 3.33 ERA in 32 games (29 starts).

Miley has turned in three straight quality starts, allowing six runs in 19 1/3 innings.

The Orioles were in serious pursuit of Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner before he was traded to the Marlins. They've also expressed interest in left-hander Rich Hill and right-hander Jeremy Hellickson, but weren't believed to have the pieces necessary to acquire the latter.

Miley, who's been traded three times since 2014, is 1-2 with an 8.03 ERA in three career starts at Camden Yards, including a 1.7012 WHIP in 12 1/3 innings.

An important feature of the trade is how Miley is under team control through the 2018 season after signing a three-year, $19.25 million extension with the Red Sox that also includes a $12 million option.

The Orioles inherit the remainder of the $6.167 million Miley is owed this year, plus $8.917 million in next season and the option. The contract includes a $500,000 buyout in 2018.

Miley spent the 2015 season with the Red Sox and led the club in wins (11), starts (32), innings pitched (193 2/3), and quality starts (17). He joins a rotation that includes Chris Tillman, Kevin Gausman, Yovani Gallardo and Dylan Bundy. Ubaldo Jimenez and Vance Worley also have made recent starts.

Miranda, 27, made one appearance for the Orioles this season in his major league debut on July 3 in Seattle and surrendered three earned runs and four hits in two innings. He also struck out four.

The Orioles signed Miranda, a native of Cuba, on May 27, 2015.

Update: Executive vice president Dan Duquette just texted the following:

"Wade Miley is a workhorse veteran left-handed starter who likes to pitch and compete. We think he will contribute to this year's club with some quality innings."
