Orioles add Maton to active roster and option Stowers (with Orioles lineup)

NEW YORK – The Orioles optioned outfielder Kyle Stowers to Triple-A Norfolk this afternoon and selected the contract of infielder Nick Maton.

Pitcher Tyler Wells was transferred to the 60-day injured list to create room on the 40-man roster.

Stowers is 10-for-35 with four doubles, a home run, nine RBIs, no walks and 13 strikeouts in 17 games. He’s started only four times this month, with the bulk of the left-handed at-bats reserved for Colton Cowser.

Stowers is 3-for-17 in June.

The Orioles want an extra infielder while Jordan Westburg is day-to-day with a bruised left hip. Maton is batting .294 with an .869 OPS in 41 games with Norfolk. He has six doubles, seven home runs and 28 RBIs.

Maton hasn’t appeared in a major league game since Aug. 18, 2023 with the Tigers. The Orioles acquired him on Feb. 7 for cash considerations. He'll wear No. 63.

Connor Norby made his major league debut on June 3 in Toronto and appeared in four games, going 3-for-14 with a home run. The Orioles optioned him June 11, so he’d have to stay down a minimum 10 days unless replacing an injured player.

That would be Westburg if he goes on the IL.

Norby went 2-for-2 last night with Norfolk and came out of the game for a pinch-hitter. He could be placed on the 24-hour taxi squad if the Orioles want him close.

Westburg suffered his injury last night in a collision with Juan Soto while fielding a ground ball in the first inning.

Wells underwent right elbow revision ulnar collateral ligament surgery on Monday with a UCL repair and internal brace augmentation. He’s out for the rest of the season.

Rookie Cade Povich makes his third major league start tonight. He shut out the Braves over six innings in his most recent outing.

Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole is making his 2024 debut after recovering from an elbow injury and getting through three rehab appearances. He’s on normal rest.

Cole has faced the Orioles 12 times in his career and posted a 2.55 ERA and 0.940 WHIP in 77 2/3 innings. He’s struck out 93 batters.

Ramón Urías is 6-for-13 with two doubles and a home run against Cole. Cedric Mullins is 8-for-25 with a double and home run. James McCann is 5-for-13 with three doubles and a home run. Austin Hays is 5-for-17 with three doubles.

Anthony Santander, who homered again last night, is 3-for-22 with a double and six strikeouts. Ryan O’Hearn is 1-for-12 with a home run. Ryan Mountcastle is 5-for-22 with a double.

A loss tonight or Thursday ends the Orioles’ streak of division series wins at 21. They’re 2 ½ games behind New York for first place.

* Jorge Mateo is playing second base tonight and Ramón Urías is starting at third.

Maton is on the bench after having his contract selected this afternoon from Triple-A Norfolk.

Gunnar Henderson moves back into the leadoff spot against Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole. Colton Cowser is in left field.

Ryan O’Hearn is the designated hitter.
